Placing 2 AMS

Plan to use 2 AMS with a X1CC.

What is the best way to place them? One on top of the printer and the other above on a shelve? Or both to the side of the printer, one on top of the other in a small shelve or with these self-printed supports?

I’m not sure there is a “best way” to place them, as long as :

  • you keep them as close as possible to the X1 (reduce PTFE distance = reduce time needed for load/unload of filaments, which may be relevant for long multi-color prints)
  • you keep PTFE tubes aligned without too strong angles

Keep in mind that with the AMS HUB (needed for >= 2 AMS) you’ll have an extra ~2 meter compatible PTFE tube that you can use to replace the (very short) PTFE tubes that are available by default at the output of each AMS (allowing other ways to place the AMS). Replacing that outside AMS tube is easy and described in STEP 1 here : Replacing AMS filament hub | Bambu Lab Wiki

Also keep in mind that the AMS hub is NOT reversible : all PTFE tubes are going to come from the “right side” of the printer (when facing the printer), so it’s easier / better to have AMS located on top / right side / bottom of the printer, but not on its left (it’s of course still possible but with extra length of tube being wasted just for the loop, hence extra distance in the end)

Of course you are probably also still want to be able to open the AMS in order to change spools…

On my side i have some IKEA BROR shelves :

  • The X1C is on one shelf at mid-height
  • My two AMS are on the upper shelf, one next to the other one
    • One AMS just “on top of the printer” (with a bit longer tube than default one)
    • One a little bit on the right (still with default PTFE tube)

Nice setup. Thanks for the picture.

The two side by side on a shelve above the printer is more convenient than any stacked solution. Better access to the spools and more free space to the side of the printer and nothing on top, which allows to open the lid for printing PLA. I’ll likely go a similar route.

Check out this stand: BAMBU AMS COLOUR 2 TIER STAND (FOR 2 AMS UNITS 1 ABOVE 1 BELOW)

The design is well worth the $2.41 that he’s asking. I am very pleased with it.

I found this rack on Amazon. It’s a little small- the hinged cover of the bottom AMS opens just enough to remain open for filament loading. It’s tall enough but not deep enough. The bottom AMS cover hits the legs before it reaches 90 degrees. I had to install a longer PTFE tube between the printer and the first AMS, and I’m building a longer 4-pin buffer cable. I really like the printed stand by PRACTICAL STLS (and the price is right). It fits much better.

Regarding the ease to put several AMS around the Bambu printers, also, maybe that part can help (i’ve just discovered it) - it allows to rotate the AMS HUB by 90°, with AMS PTFE tubes being now at the bottom and not anymore on the right :

(disclaimer : this model is not free - but still cheap / worth to be bought if you need that organization IMHO, and i’m not at all the author or affiliated in any way with the author)

Decided to paint an old white wire rack black and use it for the AMS shelf. I had one mounted to the wall before using the AMS wall mount. I found that to be a great design that allows the lid to open fully, it was very sturdy, and it just looked great. I didn’t anticipate having a 2nd AMS for various reasons but I ended up with one and due to where I mounted the 1st one I had to come up with something other than using another wall mount of this design. I did print out the mounts for the new AMS housing but this design wouldn’t allow the lid to stay open requiring some sort of spacer between the wall and the mount itself. I didn’t like the look. The wire shelf for my space is going to work just fine, well it will until I somehow end up with a 3rd AMS unit.

Awesome, many thanks for the link

Do you still have the link/info for the rack you got from Amazon. I’m having trouble finding the correct size. It looks like the one you found is perfect. Thanks

Hey, which Metal desk frame and top are you using?

The table in my earlier post is a Seville Classics UltraHD. It’s 72” by 25” and is extremely sturdy. Also the height is adjustable.

It is sooooo much easier to place the print plate and see what is happening with the print if an AMS unit is not located on top of the X1C.

I only have 2 x AMS units and both are placed on the right hand side of the X1C. There are a number of free downloadable prints for stacking 2 AMS - one of them is working o.k. for me.

I bought an Ikea Trofast cabinet and installed 2 drawers. I still have space for 2 more AMS systems. My Sunlu S4 is on top.

Are those pull out drawers? If so can you send me the link? Do you think if you fastened the cabinet to a wall or other surface you could place the printer at the bottom?

Hi, this is an Ikea Trofast shelf and it is attached to the wall. The printer wouldn’t fit in due to its dimensions. Yes, I installed the drawers myself so that I can simply roll the filament out and put it in the AMS system

The Amazon wire shelf that prp1960 posted looks ideal for my needs, however I’m having difficulty finding it on their site. Would you mind posting the link? Many thanks!

These are extremely common shelving units, I have several around the house.

Be aware that there are two kinds, the heavier ones are the ones you look for, and the lighter ones are cheaper but are more liable to shake. The heavier ones are strong enough to stand on (not recommended though, not a stool).

On the U.K. Amazon website:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Amazon-Basics-Storage-Adjustable-Levelling/dp/B01M0XLTT5

They are available in lots of combinations. You assemble them and they can interconnect with other sets of the same type. There are many different widths, heights, and shelving numbers available. You choose the heights of all shelves as they latch to indents up the length of the poles. Taller units are usually made from two or three poles screwed together.

I have turned tall shelving units into two shorter side-by-side units. I used to have a 32" CRT TV (very heavy) on a large one that now has a couple of Apple Macs and screens with storage underneath.

I have noticed almost every TV kitchen (home and professional) has one or more.

Make sure you find one with the correct width. They tend to sell these in two shelve orientations; edges up and edges down. You want one with the edges down, edges up is for things like kitchen items you do not wish to fall off the shelves.
