Currently only some image formats and .3MF files are allowed as forum post attachments.
BL users regularly use other file types they’d like to exchange, which the current filters make unnecessarily difficult. Some that come to mind:
- json
- zip
- txt
- step/stp
- obj
- stl
- f3d
- scad
- svg
- dxf
There is nothing inherently more dangerous in these file types than any other. Most of them are just plain-text anyway. Keep in mind that 3MF is just a zip archive already and can contain anything at all. And the whole filter is based on a file extension, which is very easy to bypass (the contents aren’t checked at all, apparently). If anything, the limitations provide a false sense of security.
Using 3rd party file hosting services creates its own issues (trust/ads/tracking/fees) and creates another unnecessary complication. Also that way the files are no longer associated with a post and will likely get removed at some point in the future, removing relevant data from the forum.
