I’ve got a team logo I want to convert to either STL or SVG so I can use it in a print. The SVG converters I’ve found online don’t allow me to simplify the colors (It really just needs purple/white/black but the converters pick up all the different shades in the png file and try to add 400000000 colors…ok maybe not QUITE that many lol) What is everyone using to convert and simplify PNG files into either an svg or stl file?
If you’re conversion is picking up that many colors then that is an indication that you are trying to convert an actual photograph not a vector file. The simple answer is that this is not an easy task but you can get very close and then do the final edits in something like Inkscape. But be warned, you likely have hours of painstaking mouse manipulation of arcs and lines to get it to work. If you’re looking for a quick solution for converting a photo, there is none. I’ve been searching for decades and it is right up there with the search for a free STL to STEP converter that works well.
That being said, you want to reduce the number of colors. This can be done with a dozen different open source programs such as paint.net or Gimp. Or you can do it online.
My suggestion is to try converting it to a lower color count file. Here’s one resource found just with a simple Google search but their are likely others.
Once you’ve downgraded the color pallet to as few colors as possible, then try one of the only tools to convert to an STL or SVG. The most popular free program I’ve had ‘some’ success with is Inscape. I say some, because it still required a lot of manipulation.
Adobe of course has very expensive paid tools but my experience is that those tools were only marginally better and definitely NOT easier to use.
Thanks I’ll try the color reducer. This whole logo is a pain since we don’t even have access to the original file, can’t find anyone who can discover what font it is…it’s been a headache for 3 years! I’ve tried to convince them we need a new logo, but so far now joy.
