POLL: When updating a model to a new version

So as some of us know especially with functional prints, we sometimes update our models to a new version for a myriad of reasons, and when updating to the new, sometimes the old is still wanted by some, so in your experience and opinion, which do you think is best? for the user experience? for choice and selection? for points earning? (lol) -

  • Create an entire new Model listing as V2, etc.
  • Add a Print Profile labeled V2, etc.
  • Replace the existing Print Profile, labeling it V2, etc.
  • Something else…

If you make something distinctively different, I would go for a v2.

I have struggled with this myself.

If it is a new part in a bigger model, then a new profile.

The whole issue here is WHAT is the change? I am not asking for yours, but, without an example, it is difficult to comment.

I look forward to a way to tell those who have downloaded something (and consent) that an update is available. Most would like to know, even if they do not take it up.

I wish to add two sizes to an existing model. Does it make sense to add new profiles and hope people notice or to create a new model and label it as another part of a bigger whole? I have to think about that.

Avoid re-uploading your own or others’ print profiles. Minor adjustments to an existing print profile that do not add substantial value will be considered duplicates and will be removed.

I recently did a Version 2 of several of my sabers. They were redesigned from the ground up to standardize them, but made to still look as similar as possible.

I probably could have added them as new designs, but I didn’t want to. I wanted to show that I am proud of my work and want to keep it updated.

I uploaded a new version (profile) and new photos, but left the original for historical purposes. I hope to eventually remove/make private the old ones. (Some of the oldest ones have already been made private.)

Yeah, totally get that - so it’s going to be very subjective depending on the change I suppose.

For some of mine, I actually have for example 3 listings for desiccant boxes for the AMS for a round hygrometer, I used to have 4 sets of print profiles on one listing but it caused too much confusion (and MW actually asked me to separate them out because I was using maker’s supply items only one some of the profiles and it confused users) anywho - I ended up with 4 print profiles on 3 listings each, with one having 7 profiles (long story) - but I’ve come up with an update to universally mount the hygrometers at all of the (common) angles (30, -30, 90, 0) these seem like an easy one - just update in place and get rid of the old ones that are static angled, but this also canibalizes the different listings and could get me accused of uploading the same model to multiple listings (which I believe is against the rules)

This is a very niche situation I’m still thinking about - but I have updates all the time to others like the lamps I’m making - I’ve resisted the urge to update those every few week lol until i have a cuple of improvements banked, and that’s where I’m stuck and put up the poll.

I recently updated a scraper and updated in place by adding a print profile just in case anyone was crazy enough to want the old one; the new one has replacable blades that take just a few grams of filament vs replacing the whole scraper… but lo and behold, the original is still getting more downloads despite being burried down the print profile listing (shrug!) though MW has added the metal scraper blade to the supply after I requested them so I’m posting a version that uses those metal blades, and have no idea what I should do - a new listing makes most sense i think. ugh.

Something elseish… If it’s just an update, like optimising the model for better printability but you don’t add new features.
I’d replace the print profiles and I’d upload a zip containing the old ones. In case of some one needs them for X and Y reasons.

It depends. I personally prefer to do a new profile and update the description. I don’t like when i visit a profile and see dozens of models that seem the same. Sometimes i even get annoyed and move on instead of printing it.

But there are cases where a new listing is needed, if the model has considerable changes and those are visible to people who want to download it.
