Poor Benchy

I’m really struggling to get back to the near perfect prints I was achieving a few weeks ago.

As far as I can see all speed, filament and quality setting have remained the same but I’m now getting poor results like in the attached photo. Apart from the hull of the Benchy the rest is pretty good

I’m probably missing something obvious, but any thoughts or ideas much appreciated.

Would I benefit from a new nozzle? The one that is on the printer is the factory fitted one that I’ve been using for 18 months.

Did the part fan die by any chance?

I’m sitting next to the printer whilst “working from home” and I didn’t notice the fan cutting out at any point.

Classic wet filament look, did you dry it?

18 months seems like it could also be that the thermal paste has dried up on the hot end, you can use the wiki guide to refresh it if you want to get more mileage out of the nozzle but not sure that is a good idea, it would depend on hours and amount of abrasive filament used i think.

It has been dried but maybe I should be more patient and leave it in longer.

Thanks for the tip, I’ll give it some more drying time and see how it goes

I’ve only ever used PLA and probably an average of 4 hours a week. I think I may invest in a new hot-end and see what improvements that can offer.

Yeah, keep in mind you can refresh your hot-end with the thermal grease included with the printer usually.

The process involves removing the hot-end and disconnecting the heater block that is attached with thermal grease / screws, clean it up and reapply the grease so you get even temps on the hot-end.

It could be just a bit of remaining moisture, when its really bad i’ve seen benchies with disconnected and broken overhangs but yours isn’t quite so bad.

I wouldn’t do both things at the same time, just so you can see the results of each.

Maybe its a ghost benchy? Looks overextruded. Ive seen a YT video of a guy saying the same thing. His 0.4 was now extruding 0.54 so he adjusted the printer to print as a 0.6 nozzle. I’ll search for the video and get back to you

Quick update - dried filament to within an inch of its life, but unfortunately this had no effect. I’ll see if I can pluck up the courage to refresh the the hot-end grease.

The 0.6 nozzle trick sounds interesting
