I have recently discovered the magic of using PLA rafts for PETG prints. Being able to effortlessly pop a PETG print off the build plate has been a game changer!
However, I run into a problem on any work piece that’s 252mm wide or wider. When slicing rafts, the Bambu Studio slicer always forces the raft to extend 2mm past the work piece. Even when it’s perfectly centered on the plate, I still get an error saying the g-code goes beyond the plate. The only setting involving anything having to do with the raft extension beyond the edges of the work piece is the “initial layer expansion” setting, which only affects the first layer of the raft.
Is there a setting that will allow me to reduce how much the raft extends past the edges of the work piece? I’d really only need it to extend like 0.5mm since the PLA and PETG separate so effortlessly.
If there’s not a setting, would I be able to modify the g-code after slicing to move the raft boundaries closer to the edges of the work pieces?
You can already pop PETG prints off any build plate already - let the plate cool to room temperatuee and then give it a twist.
What you’re doing with rafts is very much unnecessary in most situations, it’s a waste of time and material.
If you absolutely still want to do this. The setting you want is “initial layer expansion” in the support section. The default is -1, which indicates automatic calculation, but setting it to 0 would result in zero expansion.
No, you couldn’t practically do this with g-code.
No, the setting you mentioned does not do what I need as I already mentioned. It only affects how much the FIRST layer of a raft extends beyond the rest of the raft, not how much the whole raft extends beyond the piece. The remaining layers of the rafts all extend beyond the work piece 2mm on each side no matter how the first raft layer setting both you and I mentioned is configured.
I have worked with PETG enough to know the difference between ease of removal from the plate with and without a PLA raft intimately. I use PLA for a support interface already. I’m not really interested in anyone’s opinion on whether PLA rafts are giving me an advantage when printing a large number of things and I don’t want to have to remove and twist the build plate every time. I have experienced the advantage considerably. My question is about raft extensions and nothing else.

I’m going to withhold my further opinions on this matter - including a solution that will give you exactly what you want.
