Print models for reusable spools - various inner diameter

I purchased some OVV3d silk PLA on a cardboard spool. As I have used Overture filament and just ripped off the cardboard and loaded it onto my printed reusable spools for the AMS I just did the same for the OVV3d. The inner DIAMETER of the inner cardboard spool of this brand is only 7.5 cm and will not fit on the basic printed spool which has a diameter of about 8.1 cm. Is there a library of printable spool models with different inner diameters? The Printables file by Blizzard works great for Overture and Bambu refills… Unfortunately, I now have a 1 kg roll of silk PLA with no spool sides as I ripped them off!

I put 3m electrical tape on the edges of my cardboard spools and they work fine in the AMS, the only thing is that when they get close to empty they need to be weighted. I printed something so I could add BB’s to it for weight. I think my weighted spool centers weight about 800g

Too late, I already taped up the filament and ripped off the cardboard side before I found out the inner tube diameter was too small to fit on the spool! Guess I could try to re-glue the side back on. I just like the idea of buying on cardboard and then using the reusable spools for the AMS.

I wonder if you can scale one of the existing spools. If you lay it flat and only scale X and Y, the inner hub and outer ring will shrink while the width stays the same. Not sure if the latch will hold the two halves together afterward. It might be worth the experiment to do the scaling then lop off everything but the center most part of the hub to make sure it will latch together. Or just print it and glue it if it doesn’t. The wall thickness will also decrease, you could add material in the inner bore to give it some strength.

Good idea! I’m a newbie but self teaching 3d CAD and the hows and whys of the slicer. Everything is a learning experience! Thought there might be spool models already out there, but this will be an interesting problem to solve.

Since you want to learn CAD anyway, here’s a step file of a reusable spool you could adjust:

Here is an interesting spool I just found on Fab365.

Fab365-Foldable filament spool

While being a pretty clever design (as always with fab365), unfortunately extending the AMS‘s max spool width.
Even if printed scaled down there are still the buckles on the outer ring which need to be overcome every 1/6 turn for the rollers and feeder gear motors.
