Print orientation - Angled 3D printing can make parts stronger

Since this question keeps coming up, I thought it would be a good idea - also in the new year - to remind users, especially new ones, that orientation has a huge impact on durability. :+1:

I first considered whether to open this topic in Generals or MakerWorld, but since it clearly concerns uploading models as well as print profiles, I decided on the second option.

This video by Stefan from CNC Kitchen addresses the critical topic of 3D print orientation and how it significantly impacts a part’s strength, surface quality, support requirements, and overall functionality. Using a vacuum hose adapter as a primary example, Stefan explores how different print orientations affect the durability and usability of FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) printed parts, supported by extensive tensile testing.

Print Orientation Importance:

  • Orientation is often overlooked or left to auto-slicer defaults, which prioritize bed adhesion and minimal supports but do not optimize for mechanical strength.
  • The anisotropic nature of FDM prints means strength differs by direction: parts are usually stronger along the layers (in-plane) and weaker perpendicular to them due to imperfect layer adhesion.
