Printer clogging after PVA to PLA switch

Hello all

So recently I purchased a 0.2mm nozzle to print some miniatures with. I also purchased some Bambu Lab PVA support filament to make clean up a lot easier. It’s a rather complex print also. The print time was quite long ( almost 5 days) because of all the swapping between the PVA and PLA. It had been going fine for the first two days then I got the first filament clog warner. Unclogged it and retried the print and it seemed like it was going fine until the printer switched out the PVA to PLA. Another clog. After that it would clog every time when the printer switched PVA to PLA

Wondering why this is happening now after two days of no trouble. I know PVA is a pain to print sometimes, so if anyone has any solutions or recommendations, it would be greatly appreciated.

I would make sure the PVA is dry. Very dry. It’s a bit sticky whenever there is any moisture in it, which makes it a pain.

I’d suggest using PETG, unless the complex part means hard to reach places. If you have to use PVA then dry it and maybe slow it down. Be sure you’re purging well between PVA and PLA. Don’t want PVA in your print.

In addition to the comments by @johnfcooley , check the max temp settings of both filaments. They must be below the PVA max temp, better even with a 5° margin as PVA does nasty things in your hot end when overheated.

If that has happened, the extruder has likely abraded PVA so subsequently, PVA contaminates the nozzle again and again. So best to clean out both the Nozzle and the Extruder before trying again.

One more tip - as long as the PVA isn’t in completely trapped areas, make sure you just use it for interface layers and not all support. It will be a much faster print.

Thanks for the suggestions! The print is not as complex where i cant reach certain parts, so I’ll just use PETG for the interface layers, thanks!!!
