In the printer menu about maintenance I have two messages „Carbon Rods Clearance“ and „Lead Screws Lubrication“. They appeared the first time I turned on the printer (after self test) and in the meantime (printer has about 450h so far) I did some maintenance, but the messages don‘t disappear.
I think the messages in the maintenance menu may be misleading. They are not telling you that the maintenance needs to be done, instead they are letting you know that there is a need for periodic maintenance and giving you a QR code leading to the procedures. The actual message that says maintenance is required will pop up on the home screen and require you to respond. Clicking yes will take you to the maintenance page where it will tell you that the procedure may need to be done. If you go to the maintenance page by navigating there yourself, the message is out of context and may be confusing.
This is the message letting you know that cleaning may be required.
Ok, understand. You might be right. But I think, it is a bit misleading to always leave those messages there. I think it would be better, if they’d disappear as long as they were not needed.
I have had two different messages pop up about the z axis. One implied there was something wrong with the screws, I don’t remember the wording. It turned out there was a piece of filament it the threads that cause a bit of drag. The second was that it was time to clean and lubricate the screws. I didn’t want to use a solvent to clean the screws so I did the best I could to wipe them down then lightly applied SuperLube silicone grease. I don’t know if it’s the correct grease but it’s neutral and of a high quality so I’m OK with it.
Since doing this, I’ve noticed tools on thingiverse, makerworld and printables that hold something soft so that you can press it against the screw while raising and lowering the bed. This lets you clean deep into the threads which is a good idea as long as you don’t leave behind any lint. This is the one I’ve down loaded but not printed.
The X1C reminds the user to do certain maintenance activities perhaps based on time or performance. In another thread (here or reddit), it was suggested that these device reminders are not necessarily complete. Is this true? Are we supposed to only rely on the device reminders or perform the tasks based on the Wiki?
Not sure what they meant with complete? I believe there are periodic messages every 3 months as well as notices whenever the printer detects abnormal drag. The periodic ones don’t make much sense given you might not have printed a single thing in three months OR you could have printed over 2,100 hours. Apart from that there’s clearly a difference between printing PLA only, versus stuff like ABS or ASA that leaves a film on everything. The X1plus project showed us the printer actually counts printing hours per material type, so the periodic messages could be more fine tuned.
Personally I’ll be cleaning the rods and lead screws at printer notices, plus whenever I get the feeling it could be a sensible thing to do: A reason could be anything from a notable need of cleaning the inner glass surfaces (the carbon rods probably have the same need although you can’t see it), to whenever I do other major things such as retentioning belts. Oh and BTW I use Zeiss wipes for “quick clean/check” of the carbon rods. As long as the wipes didn’t attract any dirt, I see no need for a more thorough cleaning. And if the carbon rods are fine, I reckon the lead screws don’t need any attention - I figure they are much less critical than the rods.
