PVC glue for PLA parts

I have to glue some PLA parts and i was wondering if i can use PVC glue?
Thank you.

Absolutely you can. You’ll want to test it but I use the derivative product from the company that makes most of the PVC Cements out there. Which can be had at about $3.60/oz

But wait. Why spend money on that solution when you can spend twice as much($8.75/oz) on Gloop. It comes in a pretty container that you can display to all your friends and “They say” it’s especially formulated for 3D printing. And of course, you’ll have to wait till it comes back in stock because their always stocked-out.

It’s important to understand that PVC cement is NOT glue. It is a solvent. It dissolves most plastics I’ve used in 3D printing just enough to “weld” the two parts together much like metallurgical welding does. You’ll want to apply it to both sides for maximum effect.

For Silicon adhesion, it’s a different matter. There were a few times when I had to adhere Silicone to PETG such as the A1 Scrubber brush mod for the P1/X1. Nothing else seemed to work. So I found something specific to that that use-case. This was the only item I’ve found so far that did the trick. It is a Cyanoacrylate(Crazy glue-like) that is specifically designed to work with dissimilar technologies like PLA/PETG and Silicone. Like cements, it actually creates a bond that is stronger than the surrounding material.

Testing methodology:

What I generally do to test the strength is to print two strips of cube primitive that are about 50x10x5mm. Then I bond them–off centered for grip–and wait 24 hours. The manufactures claim it takes 5 minutes to set(working time), 24 hours to permanently bond and one week to permanently cure(that’s when the chemical reaction is complete). Then I take the two bonded products and place one end in a vice and the other take a pair of locking pliers. It will eventually break but if you did it correctly, you’ll see that the break is not at the bond it is the plastic around the bond that fails. Try this with 10% infill too and only 2 bottom layers and one top layer so you can more easily cut open the bond for inspection. You’ll see what I mean.
