Question about Standard Digital File Licenses

Still kind of new to actually designing models myself and just want to make sure I fully understand the Standard License some people use on their model.
My main question is… let’s say someone made something like a model of a Cup. It says you cannot remix their model but can I design something that goes with their model for example like an attachment ( in the cup example lets say I design a Lid that can fit on their cup) I’m not distributing their cup but I am making something that fits onto their cup. Can I design that lid and then post it as a new model since I created the lid myself? Also if you do that can you list it as a lid for “JDinKC’s Cup model”.
Another example maybe someone designs a gun and you design a scope that fits onto that gun? Sorry just trying to give multiple examples to make sure I fully understand. I was working on making an attachment to someones design that I liked but for my use I needed something else to make it function how I wanted and just want to be clear on this type of license before uploading things in the future.

Sure you can create accessories for a model. Even if it’s under this licence.

As long your model page or print profiles doesn’t contain any files of the other model and you only add a link to the other model. There is zero issue with that.

Awesome! I figured it was fine since it is my original creation. But since it fits onto something someone else made I just wanted to double check prior to posting it!

If you need to show that model in your photos to demonstrate what your accessories are for, it may be better to communicate to that model owner to avoid potential misunderstanding, even though you mostly likely can use it without permission in this case.

Also make it very clear in your description that you are making the accessory model only, and you are not the designer of the other model, and that the use of that model in the photos does not imply endorsement from the owner of that model.

Avoiding potential misunderstanding is better than trying to resolve it after it has happened.

Thanks! I’ll be sure to be careful how i post any images and be clear that I only made the attachment, not the main model it is for.

If it helps, I will relate my experience doing exactly what you are talking about.

Sometime ago I stumbled upon this wonderful model that the designer hadn’t provided a profile for, although a different user had.

Model

I noticed the other users profile didn’t achieve the look the designer had presented in the photo and the one I was after. It was about all about which colours were used for which parts. I created a profile to make reproducing that look and added it to the design.

Profile

I had printed a number of the clicky rotate counters by then and thought a case would be great.

I designed one and even managed to match the aesthetic. I added multiple options including the quantity each could store.

I uploaded this as a brand new model and provided links back to the original design to promote it.

My Design

Thanks! That is a perfect example and helps me a lot!
