I disagree just a bit…
I think the one of the biggest changes is to that this allows users to have the chance to reward less popular models, not just those who are already popular or won awards.
You can scroll all the way down and pretty much boost any designs to your own preference
Let’s wait and see how it goes.
yes, you probably are right, but I hope people will not boost dumb model reuploads which get 500+ downloads.
It’s just my hope… we will see how it goes, but at least it’s what USERS want to do with points, not just a download counter. I’ve seen cases where people were download-ing model just out of curiosity because of a smart guy making the model interesting, but it was a garbage model.
There is no statement as to whether the restrictions before the scoring change have been deleted or still apply. Those pretending to fight bots and multi-accounts, causing only the first 5 downloads to count.
I have never said anything negative about the reward reduction itself. It was always clear to me and most others that this will happen and I am not mad or negative about the reduction.
If at all I critizise how they are selling it and not that they are doing it.
If it’s not mentioned, it’s most certainly still in application
You still don’t have the opportunity to advertise your models, as long as they don’t appear and other models get a boost, my complicated models are of no use to me, as the boots are distributed again to the models that are at the top, regardless of whether they are complicated or take less than 15 minutes to make. The only aim here was to award fewer points.
I’ll reuse your image to respond to you claiming to not being negative:
The boost option, which is supposed to reward new inserts and those with several plates, is total nonsense. Boost will be given to the most popular models, even those whose design took a few minutes and printing was not much longer.
If you are good at social networks, you will also get several hundred or even thousands of downloads using this method. I see this as a problem.
I find myself already thinking about withdrawing models from Makerworld or not publishing them at all. Should I be more concerned about being active through real sales channels like Amazon or Etsy, or should I continue to offer models here, along with print profiles that have a lot of work put into making them printable, simply to give something to others? An alternative would be to free complicated but printable models from the print profile and only offer the STL.
As many already said, it was to be expected.
But I really liked the simplicity of the old system. It was easier to read, keep track of points.
Now with all those different multipliers per download count steps it will be nearly impossible to do so.
I would rather prefer to just increase the amount of points needed to redeem a reward.
Also I never thought I would ever saying this. But as there is no time limit (like on printable, and I hate this ^^). That means very popular models may not earn that much of points any more. I guess boosts will compensate for that because I highly suspect those will more benefit popular models than complex ones.
But yeah it was to be expected, the MakerWorld gold rush is over ^^
My reasons for giving my boosts to the models I did has nothing to do with their popularity.
The Bambu Pizza game is an incredibly creative way to repurpose the filament swatches that all Bambu owners are given with their printer. This is a model/game that I have downloaded, printed and play on the regular. It’s a great drinking game and it would have my boost regardless of how popular it is.
Dummy 13 is one of Lucky13Toys which have been a constant inspiration for me going on two years now so supporting them is an easy choice regardless of popularity.
I’m sure there are people like you. No doubt on my part.
What do I see in the initial phase:
Sorted by downloads, at the top of the page:
29k downloads, 4 boosts
24k downloads, 1 boost
23k downloads, 0 boosts
At the very bottom of the page, randomly no boosts.
Sorted by trending:
Balls made from grid patterns, 4 boosts, 5.9k downloads, 67 followers
Keychain (a few grams), 3 boosts, approx. 1k downloads, 1.3k followers
Windmill, 7 boosts, 770 downloads, 1.4k followers
Trending, down the page:
selected at random: no boosts. I found a very nice and printable model there: 0 Boost
Pretty much exactly what I expected.
I cant see the how this would help complex models over simple ones. porpular or not dosnt make a difference.
My concern is more about people using less time and effort to make all those awesome well thoughtout designs and upload for free, when they get less points (almost nothing above after 1000 downloads)
I would almost foresee, that more quick designs get uploaded in tons to chace the “less than 50 downloads” point rewards.
He is criticizing the PR statement, the reasons stated behind the decision of reducing the points, not the reduction itself.
For example, the balanced budget between points rewards and boost.
In reality, the reduction of points is more likely a way to balance the same budget allocated to MW amongst more users. Which perfectly fine but they are saying it in a way that’s more pleasant to read, basic PR ^^
Now bots and multi-accounts will have a harvest, they will distribute boosts among themselves.
I’m not really sur that will be so easy for bots.
It’s only 4$ (±50 points) per month maximum per account. With a 2 week window to use a boost. And to gain them you need to interact with MW, comment, prints, … That’s not easy for bots to do that.
From the blog about the Boosts:
We expect that the point farmers, whom we are fighting on a daily basis, will be very interested in the boost system, as $4 per account per month is too much to resist. Therefore, in the initial phase, please allow us to play it safe. Accounts linked to a Bambu Lab printer are difficult to forge. So initially we will handout boost token mainly to those account. We will gradually invite a wider user base to the boost system as we become more confident in our risk control system.
Users who actively engage with MakerWorld will receive boost token. The more you print, the more you have a say which model is valuable.
And importantly, this:
Each boost carries the equivalent value of a $1 gift card, it can only be redeemed by designers who receive it.
Right now, only accounts with linked physical Bambu Lab printers can receive boost tokens to give. They have to be active on MW as well, and lastly these gift cards look to be non-transferrable. Non-transferrable gift cards mean that even if bots are successful in sending boosts to each other, they can’t combine them and so it becomes much more difficult to actually buy anything with all the gift cards being split and worth little.
But downloading models is an interaction “actively engage” and that’s what bots do and that’s why they will get them. Boosts are just added value, extra money for free
Therefore, in the initial phase, please allow us to play it safe. Accounts linked to a Bambu Lab printer are difficult to forge. So initially we will handout boost token mainly to those account.
Missing the other big parts, while interaction can be faked, downloads aren’t the only engagement needed. Even with faked engagement of all criteria, like commenting, printing, and collecting/liking, the biggest part is that they’ll be restricting the boosts to accounts with physical BL printers linked for now.
Edit: Ah, I’m doing this to myself. There’s not much any of us can do to change it and it won’t be stopping me from using MW so I will excuse myself further from discussion. Hope y’all either find success with these new changes or find success on a platform that aligns with you better.
