Remove gyroid and rename cross hatch to gyroid 2.0

Please remove gyroid infill from bambu studio and rename cross hatch to gyroid 2.0

Since cross hatch came out to replace gyroid over a year ago there is no point in gyroid being there.

Every attempt to educate people about it turns into a fundamentalist debate about “gyroid vs grid” completely missing the point. The “cross” in the name makes them think self crossing immediately and not even look at it.
“But self intersecting, dude…” gyroid isnt even the third best choice for that anymore.
Its really problematic for beginners to get force fed the idea there isnt anything worth looking at apart from gyroid.
Gyroid users for the most part dont even know why they are using it but are very vocal about that its the only one.
So to make it more beginner friendly I would like to see gyroid removed and cross hatch renamed to gyroid 2.0 so everyone is happy.

I compiled a detailed review and postet it in some facebook groups but as expected no one reads it and defaults to bashing grid instead of looking at cross hatch.

No need to remove because that would break existing models. No need to remove because no infill got ever removed. Also the choice for infill might be more than any params you’ve mentioned, coyld very well be aesthetic.

What could be done is to follow OrcaSlicer pr:

The pr sorts/groups infill patterns which better explains infill usage

And also link within slicer to wiki going into each infill

The second link, to the infill Wiki, is a great resource even if you are not using OrcaSlicer.

BTW, CrossHatch is the OrcaSlicer default infill.

In other words, you want them to sabotage the lamp shade that I just designed and printed, one which uses the curvy gyroid infill with no walls for aesthetic reasons?

Also, do you have any data showing that Cross Hatch and Gyroid perform identically when printing with TPU? That’s pretty darned important when many models, including vibration-absorbing feet, rely on Gyroid’s specific characteristics. In other words, if I printed the same anti-vibration foot with the same percentage of infill, would Gyroid and Cross Hatch versions perform essentially identically? With the same weight on each, would they compress by the same amount? Would they be equally resistant to shear forces? That’s pretty important stuff when people have carefully tuned the gyroid infill percentages.

if anything needs removed its GRID infill …outdated and not designed for high speed printing, complete garbage that its set as default

I’m not a fan of infill patterns that print crossing lines within a single layer, and Grid is one of the worst because the crossing points are stacked vertically. It makes Z-hop and other infill avoidance maneuvers almost mandatory when printing tall models likely to be knocked over by a nozzle ‘strumming’ the grid infill.

But I wouldn’t take anyone’s choice away. I’d rather just see some sort of in-app explanation of the pros and cons of each infill type, perhaps as you hover over the infill pattern choice.
