Replacing hotend

My new printer ran out of filament and clogged the hotend to the extent I had to replace it with the spare Bambu supply.

I mustn’t have reassembled it as I now have temperature errors.

So, to remove the replacement to check the thermistor and heater pad, I found that I can’t rewind the filament as the heater won’t heat up to required temp. Going around in a circle here.

I cut the filament to get the hotend out but, of course, I now have a bit of filament stuck in the hotend.

I’m guessing that hotend is headed for the bin unless someone has a solution.

Even when everything works right, there is a bit of filament left in the hot end after a filament retraction. That’s why it does a purge at the start of a print, it does not know if what’s in there matches the filament chosen for the next print.

I’ve read that it’s possible to have the hot end electrically connected but not mounted so that you can test to see if it heats up. I’ve not tried it myself so I don’t know if it’s true. If it’s stuck logically because it isn’t at temperature, you could try doing a retract with it hanging there but take care. Do be very careful with the JST connectors on the PCB in the print head. I’ve seen several pictures of one being torn off of the board, they are surface mount and don’t have the strength of through hole parts.

Thanks lasermike.

I found that I hadn’t seated the ceramic heater properly so fixed that.

I just reassembled it thinking that it might heat up and spit out the scrap. And that’s exactly what happened so I’m back in business (for now!!)

You can salvage the other one unless you sent it to the landfill. Your printer should have come with a needle.

Heat the nozzle up to 250 and push that needle in from the tip to force the clean. You can also do a cold pull (google it).

Yes you can connect the wiring without mounting the hot end to the head. Very hot, no touchy with bare hands. Use pliers to hold it when doing free hanging maintenance.

You can do a cold pull and use included needle if it’s not sufficient.

Did you check the connectors? Because they are fragile

Thanks. I still have the original so I can clean it out.

Appreciate everyone’s replies!
