Pay as you go sim cards are literally free here, i can farm up dozens of accounts just by having companies send me free sim cards
A little different in the USA, so I am speaking to my experience.
It is just one extra step. I think that would at least cut down on the number of people doing that.
I found out a while ago I can get a virtual phone number for receiving texts without ever registering any personal details or even logging in.
What we used to assume protected us, just doesn’t anymore.
I hate to think about the other things I have yet to learn are no longer safety nets.

There are also numerous websites that will let you get a temp number for texts, there are numerous workable solutions out there that render registering a phone number pretty moot
I am pretty sure there is a way to stop virtual numbers from getting through. I know facebook and google are able to do that.
Sure but they can only block number ranges, which is a risk as companies recycle dormant mobile numbers, and it also requires them to know that its a range being used for this so will always be on a delay
