Safe bed tramming

I was reading through A1 Bed Tramming. The following quote really caught my attention:

After 30 seconds, the nozzle will move to the front right corner of the heatbed.

This completely violates basic safety of not putting your hand (or anything else) in the machine while its running.

To be safe, the user needs to explicitly request each motion when ready, such as by a button on the display screen such as, “Move to next”. This should not require an app.

Ideally, this would be a feature in firmware, providing information on the display (such as identifying the corner it would move to next.

The automatic movement during tramming was a bit inconvenient on my X1C but I never found it unsafe. Sometimes I would need to repeat the procedure because I was slow making a fine adjustment and the head moved before I was satisfied. The head just pushed my hand away and there are no pinch points to trap or injure fingers.

Now I use the X1Plus firmware which has the tramming code built-in and only moves the head when I tell it to, with complete onscreen instructions.

If you have the driver in the screw head, i might be more interesting.

Regardless, one ought never stick there hand into a machine that moves without being certain it is safe (won’t move, or won’t move near the person). I am pretty sure I read that in one hte A1’s manuals.

this is true, but it is so rarely needed that is easily forgotten.

In the H2D the cold pull procedure and manual feeding procedures also feels weirdly implemented, but not in an unsafe way, just slightly unclear (i.e. many times I let it extrude much more plastic than needed due not understanding some of the steps)

Having now spent 8 hours trying to tram my one, single A1 (due to hardware problems)… This sucks.

Not only should the movements be in firmware, controlled by user operation… The firmware should visit the fixed corner on the a1 heat bed for comparison (if you can see the “almost touching” gap size, or if you use the paper). In addition to letting you measure yourself, it should also then use the nozzle tap (just like the auto bed leveling and the homing) to tell you the precise heights.

In short:

  • Auto bed leveling does not negate the need to tram.
  • Bambu should not violate basic safety by instructing users to reach into the uncontrolled operating space of the device (with tools)
  • They should provide this capability correctly, safely, conveniently, and more accurately through the firmware.
