SD card not recognized

My p1p no longer reads sd cards. I have the original and it works on my computer but not the printer. I tried another sd card from my phone with the same result. Both work with my computer. I have factory reset the printer. Thanks so much for any and all insights!

Welcome to the forum.

Try “Format SD card” on the printer display. The printer requires a card formated as FAT32 which is becoming more uncommon.

It won’t recognize the cards so I can’t format on the printer

I had a similar problem when I first got my printer. I had to format the SD card on my computer using the FAT32 format. Seems to me that it wasn’t an easy process, FAT32 not being the default format.

Just to elaborate on 3dEd’s correct answer - yes, it must be FAT32, but in recent times, Windows (11) likes to format SD-cards into exFAT.

If the card runs exFAT, it will not work in Bambu Labs’ printers - so make sure it’s FAT32 and not exFAT. This process can take a long time, and I used a third party software to do the FAT32 formatting because my Windows 11 had greyed out the FAT32 option.

Get the SD Association’s SD Card formatter. It’s free. I use it for all SD cards, new and old. There’s a reserved area on SD cards that most other formatters can’t deal with or destroy.

Another neat trick to pull because Windows 11 is doing this is to drop the SD card in a camera or a phone and format it there. Then some of the older type things can read it better. Had a depth finder that had the same issue I put the SD card in a phone and formatted it put it back in the depth finder and it ran great. Not saying this will help but it is an idea.

One other thing which I just checked is that over 32GB neither the right-click format option in Windows, nor the SD Card Formatter will let you format the SD card as Fat32. Your only format option is exFAT or NTFS.

When you get into microcontroller the size of the SD card can come into play. On my now retired Creality Ender-3 Pro you had to flash that particular controller firmware using an 8 or 16GB card. At the time I thought that was hogwash. After trying to flash the 32 bit controller with 32GB cards about a hundred times with no success I bought several 8GB cards put the .bin file on the 8GB card and problem solved. That is part of why there are options like Marlin, Klipper, Octoprint, that use Rasperry Pi’s or to get around the limitations of controller boards.
Even now with Bambu Lab printers I am seeing options trickling out. XTouch. Purpose built to use a Raspberry Pi or proprietary SBC’s like the Panda Touch for the Bambu Lab printers and Biqu has a Pad 7 while Creality offers the Sonic Pad

I think something in Windows has changed. :confounded:

I downloaded a program/app called “FAT32 Format” for Windows 11 which runs once, almost invisibly, and now allows my Win11 machine to format any SD card to FAT32 - in fact it sets it as the default.

It claims to be for 32Gb and over, but works very well for my 16Gb cards.

No affiliation, just a satisfied user.

Well you know Microsoft is rolling out Windows 11 on the sly. To everyone.

I’ve been on Windows 11 Pro for over a year. Oh wait, I just looked at my Download folder and the oldest entries are from July 2022. :flushed: I guess time flies. My old machine was Win-7 so I actually like Win-11. Once I dropped a bunch of MS file thieving software and cleaned up boot junk, it’s fast. With auto logon, I get my desktop in about 10 seconds or less.

I hadn’t noticed any changes in the SD formatting until now. I’ve been using 64-256G SDs and Samsung T-7 Shields for a while. Smaller SDs that came with my Laser and BL printer were formatted “in machine”.

My Win-11 didn’t like it. All it did was flash and empty window and disappeared. Apparently, it needs more authority than I’m willing to give. Binned it.

That’s what it did for me. Now go and format an SD card in File Manager… it changes Win11 to allow it.

SDcards have gotten so cheap I no longer buy cards smaller than 64GB. All of those have come pre-formatted as exFAT.

Besides the Bambu printer, I have two GPS units and a trail camera that require a FAT32 card and have built-in formatting capability. None of those devices have recognized an exFAT card and none have offered to re-format one as FAT32.

On my Windows 11 PC, I use Rufus or (sometimes) EaseUS Partition Manager to format my cards as FAT32. I usually prefer Rufus because it is fast and also works to create bootable USB sticks from Linux distros.

When I say Win11 is being rolled out on the sly that is Windows Home or whatever they call it.
I’m part of the beta test program Microsoft has which is open to anyone but you run the risk of them installing a broken component being in that program.
Win11 Pro is a purchased upgrade. I ran the Pro iterations of both Windows and Office when I was working but have no need now that I am retired.

I’m same way about the micro-SD cards. Why buy a 8 or 16GB card when you can buy 64, 128 GB dirt cheap.
I had to resort to Amazon to find 8GB cards for the Ender I own because you can’t find small GB cards locally.
I have AOMEI Partition Partition Assistant that I use for formatting but when I said about “size matters” even though formatting as FAT32 wasn’t ever a problem, those Creality microcontrollers also required an 8 or 16 GB card to flash the firmware. You could subsequently use a larger card for loading a file for the Ender to print. Most people who don’t mess with things like 3D printers, robots etc. don’t distinguish between a computer and a micro-controller.
Bambu has shipped my toolhead parts so hopefully I can get this machine back on line.

I took it out. Didn’t like Registry hook it uses–You can’t move it either. It’s not an installable package. Win-11 works if you use a smaller SD. It also works on the older SDHC cards <= 32G. (I tested on a 16G SDHC from a game camera.)

If that works for you - fine.

I can now do the format, so I’m happy, too.

I’m having a similar issue. When I updated the firmware on my P1S my printer suddenly cannot find the SD card. If I take it out and put it back in it will show it for about 10 seconds before the screen blacks out and restarts, after the restart it can’t find it again. Any thoughts?

Try to take it to a computer, format it FAT32. If it still doesn’t work, get a new cheap 16/32gb SDCard
