SD Card slot is physically broken

The card slot does not have the spring loading feel when putting in a card. Its not seeing the card when inserted and it gives me an error that a microsd card must be loaded before printing. Submitted a support incident to get a new AP card. Is there workaround to bypass the microsd card or is it really needed to print?

Perhaps check to see if something has fallen into the slot and is stopping the card from seating correct?

Depending on how handy you are and how confident you feel in your own abilities to hack a piece of hardware, a micro-SD spring slot is not too hard to hack.

If you can bear in mind this one thing, a spring mechanism only allows the card to pop out more easily. But if the spring is broken or is blocking the card, it can be manually removed with a little care and the card slot can be used simply as a non-spring slot, albeit you will likely have to use tweezers to remove the card.

Here’s a video that shows how the slot works.

Now here’s a video on the P1P to P1S upgrade. skip to step 9 where they show you how to change the front bezel and see how they show you to remove the LCD display. What you want to note is that once the LCD dispaly is off, the PC Board behind it is held in place with only four screws. Here’s what you have to be careful of when you remove the board.

  1. Snake the LCD cable carefully through the slot. Likewise, unsnap the delicate Antenna connector for the WiFi. You can always order a new one if needed they only cost $4. In fact, I’m ordering one just in case but if your Access point is within 20ft of your printer you can get by without the antenna if you accidentally damage it.

  2. Once the PCB is off, put the board on a table with good lighting and examine the SD car slot and try pushing an SD card into the slot. With the board exposed, you will quickly see what is wrong. If the spring mechanism is faulty, pry it out with tweezers thus removing the spring mechanism and converting the slot into a manual slot.

After you reassemble this, if you disabled the spring loader you will be forced to use a tweezer to insert and remove the micro-SD card. But an alternative is to use a card extender like this one:

Or if you really want to up your game, add this handy MicroSD to to SD card converter kit and go back to the full size SD card. This is probably a good option if you plan to remove the cards frequently.

Thanks for the reply. I did end up pulling the board out. There is no mechanism left inside. I was trying to get a card to work in there manually. It had a lot of side to side play. It did see the card for a moment. I was messing with it more and must have moved to where it shorted and literally smoked the card. Don’t care for having a fragile microSD on one of the main boards but it’s there. Probably going to have to figure out how to get a new board. Thanks for the ideas.

Hi parkaveaz, Did you get any further with your board issues - I got the same upgrading and caught the bezzle and forgot about the SD card so the slot is dead, Noticed they don’t sell in the shop - If your further along please share - Did take the board out and the metal part was just hanging on.
