This only exists in my mind, just an AI generated image based on my idea of a spool that would provide heat to pass through the hub of the spool. I pitched it to Voxel maybe a year ago. Yawn. And maybe a yawn is all it’s worth. Seems to me that it would help if only a bit and if the spools are being dried in the AMS. The benefit would increase as filament gets used up allowing the hub holes to experience less resistance from the number of turns above it. What are your thoughts?
Next time you’re loading a Bambu refill, pause a moment and try breathing through the side of the coil to see how hard it is for air to pass through wound filament. That suggest very minimal free airflow movement, and therefore minimal drying will happen.
In other words, you’d manage to dry out the very first row of loops on the center hub of the spool, and that’s about it. Those also happen to be the very shortest loops AND the most tightly wound loops on the spool. Any internal drying beyond that will rely on diffusion or brownian motion to find it’s way out - which it could already do with the stock spool.
The implicit tradeoff - eliminating the cardboard center spool and also the RFID tag - really doesn’t seem worth it when you could just leave a spool in the dryer longer, or in the case of the AMS2 and HT, print while drying. I’m not even sure how to transfer a whole roll of filament to a hubless spool, for that matter, without having to use a spool winder.
Also - users could also just use a spool that has large side cutouts, which you did…that would be more beneficial than a perforated hub and not sacrifice the fundamental features of the Bambu filament system.
