Selective ironing on multipart object [SOLVED]

I have an object made out of 3D parts that are placed on a matte background. Each part has its own filament/color.

I’d like to ‘iron’ the topsides all of the objects EXCEPT the matte background. Is this possible, either by settings or some gimmick?

Did you try modifiers yet? I use them all the time but have not tried them for that purpose yet. Keep in mind that you can import any stl shape as a modifier for hughe freedom.

Oooh, I like this idea! I’ll try it tomorrow and report back! Thanks!

I tried the Height Range Modifier and it, indeed, allowed me to set the ironing for the upper range only. I ran a test case with a matte background and two parts, a ‘short’ one and a ‘tall’ one with the modifier range set to iron only the top of the tall one. This ran without an issue, but, actually, using the default ironing parameters, I didn’t see an effect on the second part. ‘Maybe’ it’s smoother, but not noticeably so.

However, that is another issue and it appears your suggestion was right on the money. Thanks!
I’ll run another test later after playing around with the ironing parameters.

I think it may be the use of the height range modifier. When I sliced your file, it did not result in ironing gcode.

It is slightly more cumbersome, but you may want to use a cube modifier. Right click the part, Add cube modifier

Then size & position as desired before applying the ironing only on the modifier

You then have ironing enabled only for the modifier enclosed region in the preview.

:crossed_fingers: and happy printing,

Well, there is a VERY good reason for that! I had the upper part of the range set to 10mm and the top of the object is at 11mm!

I’m rerunning with the top set to 12mm and ‘Ironing’ did show up in the list.
With the CORRECT Range value, this is what I got:

Smooth as a baby’s bottom!
Sorry for the mess up… Thanks again for your help!

Super job. Great demonstration of ironing.
