Share your bed adhesion secrets

Hi Guys - I know this can be considered a broad topic. But I wanted to create a thread where we can collect what you all do to get the most perfect print possible when it comes to the bottom first layers and bed adhesion.

Of course, this will depend on the print as not all bottom first layers need to be perfect, depending on the part

I noticed with Black PETG and a textured bed, that is absolutely necessary (in my case) to use a very thin layer of glue.

If not, the bottom layer will stick too much and even though the bed is cool, you’ll still can get uneven stress marks when the print is removed from the plate, therefore leaving these unsightly white marks on the bottom surface.

(I am using mostly default filament profile settings so any advice on different bed and filament temps that could address this would also be helpful)

Now, depending on your post process processing this might not be a big deal.

This is where a heat gun will come in handy. Basically just heating up the areas in an even pattern until the white disappears and the texture looks uniform.

But, I’ve had success with just using a thin layer of glue and after cooling the, print slides right off with no problems.

However, the question always arises how much glue and when do you reapply because too much glue can also cause problems

my process: after ensuring that you have a very clean bed either using detergent if necessary, hot water, etc. I wipe the bed with isopropyl alcohol, then drag a purple glue stick in his zigzag pattern being careful not to press too hard to leave any globs. Then with the paper towel soaked with a light dose of isopropyl alcohol, I drag the towel in a uniform pattern evenly spreading the glue.

You should not see any film or residue on the bed.

This has worked for me many times however the question arises is when do you reapply - and depending on your process or how busy you are you’ll probably forget to reapply and then notice the print not sliding off again and that’ll be your cue to reapply, but now you have to deal with the white marks again. :rage:

I do not have this problem with PLA, it does not stick like PETG.

So I ask you to provide any other hints tips, tricks etc. on getting that perfect first layer. i would love to hear it. This includes using any other types of filaments - as I’m start to broaden my range of different filament types.

For bed adhesion, I rely exclusively on the Magigoo range, selecting the formulation—from Original to HT—based on the part and material. I print only on CFX build plates.

My bed adhesion secret is that I do very little. I know that it is common for people to use IPA on their plates but it seems to me that filaments are repelled by IPA. I have tried glues before, yet they seem to make a mess that I would rather not have to deal with.

As of late, all I do is wipe down each plate after every print with a microfiber cloth. I have been using the SuperTack Bambu plates for PLA, except in those cases when I want the texture of a textured PEI plate. For PETG and polyamide I use the smooth and textured PEI plates. Other than wiping the plates down after each print, I have not cleaned my plates in more than a year. Brims tend to solve every adhesion problem that I have had.

What was the max size of the part in the x/y directions

One of the simplest things that has worked for me is to slow down the first layer. Give the first layer time to stick.

I have been using the Bambu Textured plate (Gold looking) for all my filaments (pla, petg, tpu, petghf, etc), which works fantastic without using glue. The only issue I have had was with ASA, which warped very bad. Switched to the High Temp Engineering Plate, which is kind of smooth. Used a glue stick, and printed with a Brim with 0 gap. Also I had to turn of all fans, otherwise warping. Used standard Bambu studio X1C settings. Also let it cool normally when done before you remove the part. Last part I printed was only .100" thick and 5.500" diameter with a boss in the middle. Printed fantastic with NO warping.
