Shiny vs not shiny is this a heat issue?

Hi all,

What causes the difference in finish between shiny and dull? Is it a layer heat / cooling issue?

thanks

Josh

Hey JoshBear,

Many things will affect the finish but look at your drop down preview menu then you will know what is changing at this area of the part this is one of the best tools you have so always use it and you can find problems areas you might want to change some setting before you 3d print the part out and as you learn what to look for you will have the best chance at getting the best 3d part results.

Many people skip using it but it is one of the best tools you have :grinning:

When the speeds slows down the filament will retain more heat and you will get the shiny layers this is what you are seeing.

Have a good one :v:

Thank you. That was very helpful. I have differences in both speed and flow at the exact point where it starts to go shiny.

How do I stop that happening?

Thanks

With the slicer having limited things we can change or modify and the part is big, these are the options that I can think of.

You can tweak the speeds to be the same all the way up and it will print shiny but slow.

You might be able to turn off overhang speeds or tweak them you would have to test the base of this part you would just cut the part up to test a small area out and this would give you the flat look as long as the overhang angle is not to much and wanting that extra cooling or lower speeds you will have to test to find out.

Variable layer height is an option for overhangs but it can also affect your part finish. You have to look at your speed also.

Tilt the part back like 22 degrees with support and see if you can get no overhang speeds but this part is big so you might not have this as an option.

Another option is cut the part up and add connectors and print it face down but I don’t know if this will work for your project as this looks like it might be a shell only.

I hope this helps you out keep us updated on your project :grinning:

Thanks again. Will look at all that. This is the project. The photo is V1 and is a bit rough around the edges. The slice is V2. Lots more work to go :).

Regards

Josh
