Hi all, wondering if anyone can help with this persistent outer wall quality
issue I’ve been dealing with.
I’m trying to get rid of this transition in my print where it slices from two inner walls to one gap infill. This point in the print always has a surface imperfection, though sometimes small it’s an issue because my print is only 1.2mm thick and semi-translucent in White PLA.
You can see in the slicer pics this same point in Line Type and Line Width.
This is Classic wall mode, Arachne has the same issues though not as bad.
I’d really like to change the slice to have no transitions like this, ie all gap infill or all inner walls. Anyone know a way to do this?
I did try remodeling my print and as best I can I made it consistently 1.2mm, though it is a pretty organic shape so it could shift a bit. ( I assume it must which is why the slice is doing this?)
anyone have any insight to share? I’ve tried all I can think of!
Arachne is the best option but of that’s not working then perhaps a less likely change to these might help a little.
Have you tried changing the wall sequence from the default of inner outer to outer inner. This will allow the exterior filament time to set up and solidify before the next filament passes. This affects the outer wall the most.
Of course, the best option is to go back into the model itself and correct design deficiencies. One can’t expect perfection from a mere 1.2mm wall. The laws of physics are unforgiving.
Thanks for this, I do need to keep the wall at 1.2mm so it’s making it interesting!
I had pretty good results with Arachne and playing with the wall sequences, but it still looked bad.
On a side note, the arachne wall did some strange stuff in certain parts of the print, some really pronounced lines (like 1mm protruded) that weren’t mechanical issues. I know this because when switched to classic wall the lines were gone. The interesting part is when I changed the orientation of the model on the bed, they went away as well. Sorry for the ■■■■ pic but you get the idea.
Anyhow, I chalked it up to weird arachne wall artifacts that I’ve heard can happen. Seen anything like that?
Anyhow, back to the wall thickness issue, I may have just solved it by making my inner and outer wall thicknesses .55 mm. When sliced in classic mode there are now only walls and pure gap fill with no transitions.
A little test printed fine, I’ll print the whole model overnight and see and let you know.
Thanks for the input and thoughts, much appreciated!
Thanks for sharing that tidbit. I hadn’t realized that would affect the smoothness but it makes sense. This is exactly why I interact here with fellow community members. Had we not exchanged the earlier dialogue I would not have picked up on this tip.
