So... Allowed to repost public domain models?

Do what you want with what I found, personally models that are public domain in my opinion should not be posted in contests. I dont know just my opinion.

What does public domain have to do with be allowed in a contest? I’d guess the rule is that they be original, not exclusive to MW.

Ineligible Models

  1. Models that have already received rewards from the MakerWorld 3D Design Contest.

  2. Old models, i.e., models that were published before the Contest Period.

  3. Models uploaded as Remix and Share will be ineligible to be considered for winning.

IDK I just feel like its a gray line some people see reposting others models as fiting in the remix category.

Perhaps you mean in the sense that you are not the author, so even though it is a “public domain” model, it’s not morally correct to be submitting it to a contest where you will be the one to receive the reward, not the author?

Yes correct but thats my opinion, I think its morally wrong but opinions are opinions and right now mine does not matter.

He didn’t upload it as share, do you think he isn’t the author? That would probably be against the rules.

I mean he says he " built this cradle with failure in mind", so I can only assume he is the author however the printables account only shares that one model and the printable’s model came out like 2 years before so… I dont know I leave it to your opinion.

Edit again: Could this be moved into the is this cheating topic?

The rules seem very clear.

Specific Guidelines

  1. Upload your original 3D models to MakerWorld in .3MF or .STL format. Including a Print Profile with your model can help you gain more Likes and Downloads.

  2. Upload your original 3D models within the Contest Period.

Judging Criteria

There are constant references to BOTH your and original.

Neither is true.

There are references to Old being disqualified.

It is old.

I am unsure if it is a Remiix or Share.

But, both continue the old and original theme.

I imagine this falls far outside the scope of contests unless the contest rules specifically allow older models.

  • The entry does not appear to be the work of the original designer, this would make it invalid.
  • The fact that it existed before the contest started would make it invalid.

I would report it and let MakerWorld decide.

That text appears to be a copy-paste from the printables listing. However that username does say again in the comments below he designed it, so while I would have expected either a cross-link to the printables listing (why repeat yourself) or more of the content of that listing to be duplicated… I think the authorship is “questionable” at least/best?

I completely agree with you, I have already reported and now its just a waiting game.

I have a question about public domain files: I sometimes help organize a stand at a comic book convention. If the file is public domain, can I print it to resell it? What about models I made in MakerLab? I was planning to print non-public domain items just for display, such as book nooks to hold up the material being sold.

Yes. Public domain licence allows for all uses. Actually, a lot of CC licences allow selling of printed items, as long as the licence doesn’t say “NC” it allows commercial use (but make sure to follow the licence, selling items with CC-BY licence is allowed, but you must credit the author)

YOU made them, they are yours to do whatever you like with them.

That usage depends on interpretation… Is the not-for-sale booknook that holds material being sold used in commercial or non-commercial manner?

we sell books and magazines, those needs something to make them stand up right.
i guess that if i use them as “eyecatcher” to attract costumer that still might fall under commercial use?

If you use it to hold up books, not commercial.

If you sell it so others can hold up books, it is commercial.

If you printed cable hooks and used them to hold up wiring in a shop, the fact the shop is commercial doesn’t transform the use to commercial. Just don’t sell them unless the license allows.
