Why does one need to add weight to the spools? Can’t say that I have ever run into a situation where the spools needed more weight. It seems to me that if one is having problems with one’s spools jumping and jamming something is wrong other than the weight of the spools.

More gravity on the rollers can help it from skipping and jumping. Conversely, More gravity on the rollers can make it bind more easily if there are light tangles.

I would NOT recommend using alkaline batteries. Leak and heat danger (especially if youre using the sunlu ams dryer thingie). Use Pennies or Zinc bolts

Desiccant holders is your best solution because you kill two birds with one stone. If you add too much weight you can stress the drive gears and damage them since they are made of plastic. If the spools are skipping, find out why. If they are cardboard, make rings for them. I use SunLu and Bamboo spools for the refills, don’t have skipping issues with them, but the cardboard ones have all kinds of issues and making universal rings did the trick. Adding desiccant containers to all the spools not only has everything running smoother, but keeping every thing drier too.

Nearly Empty spool issue - possible workaround

The issue at the end of spool is more due to the angle the AMS is pulling on the filament than the weight of the spool (increasing the weight can wear the AMS faster). There are several models on makerworld (look for AMS saver, AMS guide or AMS helper) to solve this. I use a mix of these 2 to make a set as light as possible (although I modified the button so the PTFE can screw in it rather than just slide in) and I never had a problem with any spool even at end of it and even with spools that h…

That’s for AMS1 but also exists for AMS2 although I think the angle of the feeder on AMS2 was modified to prevent most of the bouncing

Doesn’t that sort of protect the AMS from tight taped end of rolls?

No it prevents spools bouncing when a good part of the filament is used. When it’s the case, the path between spool and feeder gets more and more horizontal and that’s what makes the spool to lift.

I use 500g scale calibration weights in mine - with a plastic adapter to allow them to be inserted once spools start to get low.
