So my mini is making an odd noise. I’ve tightened everything done a lot of research and i’m not even sure where this sound is coming from.
I have a youtube unlisted link below. Only makes the noise when the motors are moving the x and y, when pushing them by hand it goes away, so it I’m thinkin it can’t be something internal.
Doesn’t seem to be nozzle rubbing on the bed as different textures and plates make an identical noise, and you don’t see inconsistencies in the first layer.
Anyone have an idea what to check? No video editor anymore, so jump into 17 seconds in, at the end of the video I stop the print and move xy y on their own. I’m stumped!

I would just chalk it up to normal motor noise. Maybe it is louder in person, but given what I can tell from in the video, it is not a big deal.
Thinking of the ender 3 days, the stepper noise is similar, but this is still considerably quieter. This isn’t particularly a sign of wear. I would start to worry if you start getting quality issues.
Frankly, if you didnt point it out, I wouldnt even notice.
true, I just took the bottom of the machine off and moved the bed back and fourth with my head right up to it, noise almost sounds like its coming from the power supply, sounds like its the middle of the machine but WHY only in two spots on the y axis? It’s just weird.
Out of curiosity, how many hours on the printer?
when I put my ear up to it, I moved the printer with it turned on by the way to really hear the sound because again, no sound when motors aren’t doing the work.

It’s just super weird, doing a first layer right now so no fans on and going slower, in the middle of lines you randomly hear “SCRAPE” There has to be something rubbing somewhere but opening the printer I don’t see how its possible. I’m wondering if its the Y pulley bearing, but for some reason it only does it when its being pulled from the motor and not the bed.
It’s almost impossible to hear the weird noise over regular speakers, but with headphones on at a high level, you can hear it clearly. And I can tell you mine has other noise problems, but I don’t have that weird noise I hear in your video.
I would suggest you make some test models. Make two very thin elongated outlines, one to test X and one to test Y. You essentially want each model to hold one axis in place, while you move the other axis to track down which exactly is causing the noise. This will help troubleshoot axis at higher speeds.
A simple quick test you can also do before testing the above, try the built-in display axis movements controls. See if you can replicate the sound using them. This will help troubleshoot axis at lower speeds.
This isn’t going to solve your problem, but it will help you get a better troubleshooting work flow if you can dial in which axis is causing the noise.
I was able to use the controls and solve that it is indeed the Y, I know I kept saying z in the video though, I meant Y.
It’s at two points. I’ve had the entire bed off for other reasons, had the belt off to where the bed moved without it so I know its not physically rubbing on anything. I took the bottom of the body off, held the machine over my head put my ear to it, and pushed back and fourth on the y button, WEIRDLY it sorta sounds like its coming from the power supply, right in the center of the machine.
It happens in the exact same two places on the y axis, and only when moving in one direction.

I’d suggest trying the basics if you haven’t tried them already. Try cleaning and then re-lubing both sides (L/R) of the Y axis rails. Make sure you spread it evenly across the entire top and bottom of the rail, not just applying it to the top, as the guides on the build plate wrap around the entire top and bottom of the rail. If you have some tool like a small paintbrush or a small foam tip, this would work best for spreading it. You can check maker world too, there are some free prints for tips that go right over the lube bottles that help evenly distribute the lube.
It can’t be mechanical because it would do the same thing when you move the bed without the motors. I was thinking it was a pulley or a bed bearing or something too BUT, I think I may have solved it.
I’ve done this already but this time it made a difference. I ran the motor noise cancellation calibration and the sounds seem to be gone. I run this calibration once a week, or when my motors start to sound noisy. Why wouldn’t these settings just be turned on at all times? And why do they fall out of whack?
Anyway unless its a total coincidence it seems to be doing ok but yeah I literally took the bottom off, HELD THE PRINTER OVER MY HEAD, and pushed the y button and and fourth over the noise spot to try and pin point it, sounded like it was right over the power supply.
I could hear it was regular towards the corners of the print and I was looking at the print itself, you have some uneven texture on the first layer.
The sound you hear and the effect on the first layer sounds like your hotend screws are loose. Double check your hotend screw tightness. I’ve suggested this same fix in 2 threads today.
The bed was dirty, was just playing with stuff. All screws are tight, like I mentioned if you change the built plate to a different texture its the same sound. I’ve been through those loose screws I check them all the time.
I think I mentioned that in the video that all the screws were tightened. Good comment though those screws cause so many issues.
But also, above I think I fixed it? I run motor noise cancellation once every few power ups, and this time the sound is gone, so it has to be something electrical. I think it makes sense that sound was coming from the power supply when I stuck my face in there lol
I think I got it figured out. It is definitely electrical. Ran the motor noise cancellation test and BOOM, the sound is back. It’s something to do with the power supply. Like a previous poster said, I wouldn’t worry about it. Doesn’t seem to effect print quality, just ODD.

maybe try lubricating the axis thats making noise
Its now both x and y, I lube regularly! Re did the calibration noise is gone again. Just an interesting observation we can learn from… unless just my machine has this issue. Most people probably don’t enjoy sitting there and staring at their prints as much I do lol so, if its not just my machine people probably don’t notice it.
I have the same noise but with the A1 (yours is A1 mini). It is driving my crazy, I already adjusted belt tension (as instructed by the wiki), cleaned, lubed, and the scrapping noise only appears when the y axis is moved by the motor in two specific points, by hand no noise at all. The y axis concept is a little bit different from A1 mini, so I really don’t now if it is normal or not.
yeah I kinda just decided to live with it when I found out doing the motor noise cancellation was the issue. If I start to hear it I run the calibration and it usually goes away, sometimes I do it twice. Once i get it to stop I leave it until I hear it again. Like I said above I took the whole bottom cover off, held the machine over my head and manually moved the axis with the screen, the noise is coming from the power supply. It’s proabably just how they are and most people don’t notice.
You are probably kinda like me where we literally stand over our machines and watch printing lol.
I love watching my machines print, its just interesting to me… and pla smells SOOO GOOD

Thank you for coming back replying me. I started to notice the same noise in x axis, in two specific points as well, but just like yours, when moving it by hand there is nothing cathing nor scrapping.
I didn’t tried yet to check if the sound changes after calibration, but maybe I will do it before deciding to live up with this just like you did. Thanks
