Strange Print "error" using Bambu Basic Pla

Hi there,
actually I am a littlebit dissapointed about the print quality my bambu produced and want to find out what went wrong.
It is the T-Rex base scaled to 170%, 25 % infill (weight), 4 top layers and adaptive layer height. Print speed standard and flow calibrated as well as K-factor.
Any ideas what could have caused this problem?

That looks like over extrusion to me. You could also iron the top surface.

And maybe add a top layer or two and, if ironing is too much of a stretch, slow down further for the top layer.

But this just hides the problem and doesn’t solve it :thinking:

Depends on the root cause. With PETG, I had similar issues. There the problem was drooping which can be overcome by giving top layers time to stabilize.
Slowing down however will show you immediately if root causes are linked to dynamic responses and interactions and eliminate almost all of them (except VFA).

But I do think that you are actually onto something with the other thread on Silver PLA. Setting Max flowrate to 15 (or even 12) may be worth a try. If you can see a difference in the top surfaces speeds and/or Flow rates in the slicer, then it is definetily worth a shot.

Well first, thanks for posting high quality pictures without being asked.

I have some questions though. What aspects are you unhappy with? I see three possible areas of disastisfaction with each having it’s own potential remedy.

1. non-smooth texturing.

As was suggested by @JonRaymond, ironing would solve this problem but you would want to experiment with the ironing angle and speed. I would suggest that in order to not waste filament, use the cut tool and experiment with a smaller section of this pedestal. It will not only print quicker but use far less filament. I might also suggest ironing with concentric pattern for smoothness but you’ll have to judge.

You could also experiment with the top fill pattern though before going the Ironing route which would be smoother but slower.

You might try changing the top layer pattern to something else. Experiment with Hilbert if you want a nice decorative pattern.

2. Pronounced Layer lines

This might be caused by extrusion problems. You may want to either tune your filament profile or a simple test is to use quiet mode “during” print to change the speed to 50%.

3. Extrusions zits

This lettering problem is very difficult to solve. You could try slowing the print but the usual remedy is to use the cut tool and cut the plate off and then using the dowels feature to align and glue post-print. For this plate example, it would also give you the nice option of printing the plate in a contrasting filament and since you can print it flat, you’ll get a really truly crisp outline that’s impossible to achieve in a angled orientation. I did this for a pedestal I produced for a series of figurines.

The biggest thing I am unhappy with is the like “Salomon skin” top layer… :thinking:
As I read on another Post Bambulab is suggesting to lower the flow capacity to 15 mm^3 for silver PLA.
Could this solve the problem? (don:t wanna waste another 250g of Filament :see_no_evil:)

Could it solve the problem by lowing the Max Flow Rate? Most likely yes. However, it never hurts to calibrate your filament profile using the Max flow rate calibration tool. This is only found in Orca Slicer not Bambu Studio just in case you go looking for it.

It’s important to note that the predefined filament profiles are approximations that average out the tuning for most use-cases. However, if you want to get really granular, then dialing in an exact filament profile will achieve the best results. As an example, I often have more than one profile for each filament. The first is usually the rough one for speed and the second for dimensional accuracy. I from time to time may dial-in a third for “clean” print if I am doing a creative model where artistic lines are more important than strength and accuracy.

If we calibrate in Orca - does it incorporatre those into your cloud based print profiles that are sent to printer and\or could also be later used in Bambu Studio OR ?

Good question.

I must confess that shortly after learning how to connect in Lan-only mode(in my case, five days of owning my printer), I discarded the use of Handy and anything to do with Bambu’s cloud server. So I can’t answer your question without doing quite a bit of research.

The first reason for this is that I do not trust a Chinese company device on my network, especially one like BL who has demonstrated a poor understanding of both efficient network transport technology and most of all, a complete lack of caring/understanding of network security.

The second reason I shun Bambu’s cloud, is that performance suffers dramatically when having to broker a file transfer over the cloud and back.

I also found that my needs aren’t met by phone based app since I use a lot of other software such as CAD and the various Windows utilities to manipulate STL and STEP files. So my use-case is completely contrary to the audience that Bambu’s cloud approach is focusing on.

Also, it should be noted that with the recent 1.7 release of Bambu Studio, Bambu is on the path of self-promotion as witnessed by the fact that the last 1.7 release that did not put anything in the way of Quality of Life improvements into the software. It was clear that 1.7 of Bambu Studio had a solitary objective and that was that stupid “Upload” button to self-promote their online disaster known as Makerworld. They are clearly, not as customer focused anymore now that they have carved out significant market share. Although they have added a couple of token features in 1.7 that were borrowed directly from Orca, why not just use Orca and get all the goodies.

I think 2024 will be a defining year for Bambu Labs in that they have decision to make. Are they going to be customer bullies like Apple, or are they going to go back to their roots when they released the P1P and produced creative technology at a competing price? Based on the bait & switch tactics on Makerworld, the trending is not positive.

The two slicers store profiles in different places on your computer, but the .json files are
synchronized through the cloud. The values are only used if both slicers use the same parameters. So if you change color, flow ratio, or temperature in one slicer, it will change in the other slicer also. Orca offers more options, and those extra settings are ignored by Studio.

An example would be Pressure Advance, which Orca stores in the filament profile. Synchronization ensures that the value is also in the .json file used by Studio, but Studio will ignore it. Bambu recently added some calibration to Studio, but they store the Pressure Advance (K value) on the printer, so Orca does not see or use it.

This is all subject to change as the slicers develop and diverge. At the moment, the only reason I see to use Studio is to use the MakerWorld profiles, but I do not trust those. Since I feel I have to verify all the settings anyway, I prefer to just download the .stl/.step files and apply my own settings.

That “calibration” button next to project is very hodgepodge - but useful. In addition to the above about it storing the k-values on the printer, note that you’ll lose it all during firmware upgrades and that you’ll need to manually make sure you select it in the AMS PA profile dropdown every time you put the roll in. It tries to be helpful for extrusion multiplier and creates a new filament profile everytime… but I usually delete those.

I keep a separate spreadsheet offline that has all the calibration values and re-enter it per project anyways. Keeps the number of filament profiles down (I just have class-brands, not color) and minimizes forgetting to set the AMS properly when I swap filaments around.

Does the printer move much while printing?
