Keep getting this strange finish in top layers anytime I’m using Basic PLA or even PETG-HF. Using 0.4 hardened steel nozzle, calibrated with 0.02 K factor. Green and yellow are Bambu PLA Basic and the white is Bambu Matte which has no ripple effects and is nearly smooth as can be.
It’s possible it could be your infill choice.
I prefer gyroid. The number of top layers also affects things. The default should be 5, have you chosen a lower number?
I do not believe it is infill related, but yes I am using 50% gyroid infill with 7 top layers
you may be manually calibrating the bambu labs filament out of its sweet-spot. see here for a simple testing method!
Looks like it’s ironing after all, or at least in part! Per suggested above, printed without calibration and stock filament settings on both…turning ironing ON gave me the waves.
How do you calibrate ironing?
ah, i don’t have experience with ironing. the ripples look like over-extrusion and/or too much heat for the layer height, but the defaults print looks under-extruded and with a few blobs which looks to me like moist filament!
Yes, its underextrusion on Ironing. Have dealt with the same thing myself. Try making a set of 9-10 cubes and print them as objects with different ironing settings until you find what works for you. I found that 30mm/s with 15-20% works best for me, looks really glossy. 20mm/s with 10% too. But try and see for yourself
Thank you all! I’m using this Ironing calibration: speed&flow,15-40mm/s & 10-50% by asdfghjklö - MakerWorld and will post results later, had to run to work. It looked like the best results for me were in the 25-30% at 40-50mm/s range (again, using the Bambu 0.4 hardened steel nozzle).
I’ll have to test on larger areas as well, but WOW, the difference with finish is amazing!! Some of the swatches almost look like they’re molded without any sanding or post-processing. Excited to share results but this was definitely worth looking into!!
