Strength of parts and layer height

Hi guys,

I have printed on a 0.6 noozle with PETG at 70 dregrees bed and 230 degrees noozle temp on the textured plate.

The print itself went fine. But some parts of the print are very fragile and break apart easily.

One thing to consider: For the PETG I used PLA as support. For the PLA+ I used Verbatim BVOH as supprort, so maybe the PLA as support material caused also the problem? I am now testing Support W as Support for PETG. Lets see how it turns out

You can see below PLA+ with 0.36 layer height and on the right you see PETG with 0.2 layer height. The PETG part is very fragile and broke apart easily. Do you know why?

The point that broke is directly at two layer lines it seems, so the most likely cause is bad layer adhesion.
It can usually be increased by raising the nozzle temp a little, but if you do it might or might not impact quality, so test it out.
The other tip is to use a modifier on that part of the model and increase infil to 100%l or wall count for the little hook to give it additional strength (if its not already completely filled anyways)

I also just read that Support W cant be used to PETG, so I aborted the print.

I setup infill to 100% and wall loops to 4.

Any hinty for this part of the settings?

You have set infill direction to 100°, not infill to 100%, at least it is not shown in the screenshot.

Like this?

If you were using pla as support material, it is possible you got some remnant pla in your petg and that caused weak layer.

There’s another thread going on about using pla for petg and vice versa for supports. It was determined that flushing out the petg was easy enough on a pla print, but even a minutiae amount of pla contaminating the petg would cause brittle and weak layers.

There is also the possibility that your petg is wet and needs to be dried

yes thats a very good point. I read that the PLA to PETG flush must be at least 700. It was currently at 107! So I also assume that PLA has mixed up with PETG and caused the issues.

That looks like that’s for Ikea’s Skadis. See if you can find or mod a version that uses the universal hook. I use the hook from this collection but there are many out there.

yeah I usually look in printables.com and then search for Skadis. Its awesome
Currently I am printing Filament Spools for my Skadis wall.
