Been just a couple of months with my H2S after about 7 years with a Prusa mk3s+. Not one to get overly deep into customizations, just been using 3D printing for functional prints.
Anyway, wondering if others have run into this? I just started a support case, so hoping there’ll be help there, but I’m guessing this is all about under extrusion for some reason? Here are the details…
As of last week, all of my prints are failing / I’m stopping them as I see them going awry. The printer had been printing perfectly prior, and the only change I can roughly correlate with this is the latest firmware update. However, I rolled that update back and tried again, and I get same results. See photos for what’s happening: first layer completely rough / in part missing. I’ve tried the following:
Thoroughly cleaned build plate - no change.
Tried Different filaments - all Bambu Lab PLA, no difference between spools
Dried the filament again (is currently at 16% humidity)- no change
Tried a different nozzle - no change
Tried different models - no change
Re-ran calibration (all but high temp plate) - no change
Rolled back firmware (I was on most recent) - no change
Ran auto flow dynamics calibration - no change. It said part of the calibration failed (assuming because it was under extruding then also)
Updated firmware again to latest version - no change
This definitely looks like the nozzle is too close to the build plate.
First I would check if your heater element is still tightened. If you remove the nozzle, you should have access to the screws. Those screws tend to loosen over time.
Since you tried another nozzle, I presume that the nozzle is properly seated and clamped. But it can’t hurt to feel if there is play.
Second thing that comes to mind is that the eddy current sensor (that is used for probing) is defective. That would be something for support.
Thanks much, Gerrit. I think you’re on to it. Last attempt I actually did notice noise like it was too close to plate / partially grinding. I checked the heater element and it’s still tight, so perhaps that sensor might be the issue.
Did another print, seemed to be under-extruding (print paused in the middle saying it was having problem extruding). It’s PLA matte if I didn’t mention prior. Extruder clogged. Put in new extruder. Ran print - - it scratched the textured PEI plate
Re-ran calibration - better, but still not good.
Reset factory defaults - better, but still problematic.
Keeping this updated in case others have similar issues.
I reverted firmware once again, calibrated, and the first layer is maybe slightly better but still not good. Curious if this photo of a top layer of a part (drawer insert for AMS rise) is consistent with bed leveling issue or points at something else? Note, this is the first time I’m leaving the door open as I had heat creep before.
Does the H2 series tap the bed to perform its leveling?
If so, you might want to do what the A1 users have been doing forever with that style of nozzle holster - check to make sure it’s screws on the back of the heatblock are tight. You seem to be persistently autocalibrating to a result of “too close to bed” and that can happen when the nozzle deflects in its holster due to loose screws.
Cheers all…will try these things at next print. Currently it seems to be doing fine on its 2nd print on older firmware…without me making any changes after the 1st print Something intermittent it seems, so yes - @Gerrit and @Bullocks I could see both of your suggestions being correct here.
Support asked me to check screws on the heater assembly. While they weren’t ‘loose’, I could turn them about a 1/2 turn, so that could have been it, I guess (good call @Bullocks !) ? I’ll be monitoring the next few prints and am still hesitant to go up to new firmware again, but it seems like that might just be a red herring. I’ll post an update in a day or two. When I advised you to tighten the screws of the heater, you mentioned that the heater was tight, now it seems that you were able to give the screws another half turn.
Yeah, you’re right to be confused as I messed that up and could’ve saved a lot of time/effort for everyone. I thought it was tight enough at first…it wasn’t . Really appreciate your help!
Have had a handful of prints now without issue. @Gerrit nailed it at the start…i wasn’t smart enough in the moment to fully tighten the heater element screws.
