Suspended-string models - technique for removing supports

There’s a wonderful suspended-string model called “Easter-Jesus Resurrection Suspended String Art,” and I just wrecked my first print of it. The model is at Easter–Jesus’ Resurrection Suspended String Art - Free 3D Print Model - MakerWorld

The strings are very fine, and I probably had wrong slicer settings which I will review.

But it will come down to how do I remove the tree supports from the strings in the print? The strings are very fine. Should I try to free the strings before going to the larger pieces of support? X-Acto knife or some other tool?

I’m very discouraged but I’m going to keep this particular print and, hopefully with some suggestions here, learn better how to handle support removal. Then I will try the model again.

I printed that model, there shouldn’t be any supports on the strings.

You don’t because there aren’t supposed to be any.

So I need to use manual supports?

I have always used automatically generated supports. So I mark the spiral and Jesus for supports but not the strings? I have not done this. I will look for videos and pages on this but if anyone has links I would appreciate them…

Best case scenario:

You load the .3mf into bambu studio, hit slice and everything that needs support - has support.

Maybe because bambu studio is smart enough or because the model designer already painted support.

If that’s not the case I’d suggest painting the supports on the model, using the image as a reference.

Did you import the geometry only or did you import it as a project?

You can change the support threshold angle to 25. The 3MF file has it set to 2. If that dont work you will need to paint the supports on. I don’t think I had to paint them though.

OrcaSlicer 2.4.2 slices the .3mf and supports the figure and painted areas of the spiral, with no supports on the strings:

Studio 2.7.1.62 and 2.8.1.55 Beta slice the same .3mf WITH supports on the strings:

I suspect something in Studio changed since the model was first posted.

I suggest manually painting support blockers on the strings.

EDIT: The portable Windows version of Studio 2.6.0.51 does NOT generate string supports for this project.

As far as removing supports goes, I only use something sharp at the end of removing supports to do any necessary cleanup if parts have stuck too hard to the support.

At the beginning I use long precision needle-nose pliers, long precision flat jaw pliers, and sometimes open jaw wire cutters. Mostly crushing and twisting to break it free and with the various small pliers I work on removing the supports a little at a time. That is unless the supports end up being really big, won’t hurt the model coming off all at once, and just look neat on their own.

But with supports, patience and not getting too aggressive pays dividends.

Studio generated legs for all of the strings

Use the profile provided; there shouldn’t be any supports on the strings. The model description explains multiple times that good calibration and bridging are required for a successful print.

I guess it’s time for me to learn about bridging…

Did you set the threshold limit to 25 and give it a shot? Worked for me.

I guess I’m looking up “threshhold limit” too…

But I got a pretty decent print with manually painted supports where they seemed needed.
