Tape at the end of spool

So assuming that the tape is applied “correctly”, either the filament freely running out or resistance on the filament from the tape should trigger the refill?

If the tape pulls off the roll, it is going to stop your print because it will jam somewhere.

If you have the option selected to use another bay from the AMS it will not switch over when any feeder is jammed.

Silver PLA basic refill, ordered in October of this year. When the roll got to the end it pulled off only the filament and left the black tape as expected. I was watching it the entire time since I know it can mess up the AMS if the tape comes off.

the only real difference I can see between the one that failed and one that worked properly is that the filament was about 3/8" to 1/2" under tape on the good one. On the failed one it was closer to 3/4" of filament under the tape. I am not sure this is a great solution, but this is how it has played out for me.

Silver PLA Basic - tape did not peel of cardboard when pulled in by AMS. Filament came off clean and worked as is.

Bambu’s full response is in this thread on Aug 20th 2024. I missed that before and found it tonight.

Again still not reassuring, there is a lot of spools out there that are going to cause an issue.

Good news! Just finished a roll of PLA black from my newest shipment from Bambu. Shipment ordred on 10/27. The tape stayed on the roll and the filament came out without issue. Black tape. Looking at the roll when I got home, it was obvious that only a little of the filament was taped down compared to my other rolls that I filmed for Bambu. They were taped down probably an inch or more.

I mean, I just ordered my Gray PLA Matte about 10 days ago. I had the same issue–tape at the end of the spool.

There will be tape at the end of the spool.
The question is, did the tape come off the spool when it got to the end of the filament?

This is the first time this has happened to me in a long time. Blue silk filament. On a printer with AMS the problem occurs, but it locks up and the print can be recovered. On a P1S without AMS the problem is much more serious, because the printer, not having the AMS sensors but only on the hot end, this continues to print because the filament remains blocked between the filament entrance and the hot end, causing half-printed models to be thrown away. This is my experience, large model, over 500g of filament ,the spool runs out, the printer continues to the end, a lot of filament printed and thrown away because the model could not be recovered. I opened a ticket, but I find this thing about the final tape absurd. I have always used Bambulab coils for a year and a half and this is the first time this has happened to me.

No, I have an AMS Lite and it wasn’t powerful enough to pull the filament free of the spool, causing the print to be paused and an error message generated. About an inch of the filament was under the tape.

I have never seen this tape. Maybe it is the manufacturers in the USA make it different.

Would like to add my voice to the tape issue. Ruined a 5 hour print

Please put a ticket in for this. Give them as much info as possible.
You might get your money back on the spool…
Your lost time and possible damage to any equipment, they don’t care about that…

Well, a roll of Black Basic PLA. Happened to me after getting home an hour ago. Tape was stuck inside the ptfe tube. Fortunately it forced the motor and it stopped before getting into the hotend. Just to mention that it was a refill.
Said a few weeks ago that it happened to me for the very first time and now again, both refills and this last one ordered 1 month ago maybe.

At least when spooling refills you can look at the inside of the cardboard tube to see if a filament tail is sticking through. But once it has a spool in it, it’s up to the gods, old and new.

happened to me on 3 different rolls. All ordered mid/late October. This tells me the issue is wider and still not fixed. I wanted to put a bigger order in, but i’m not sure if i want to babysit every damn roll moving forward.
Annoying, frustrating… hope they get a solution in place soon.

I hope you put a ticket in for this.

There are different makes of filament out there. I mainly use Overture… Not had 1 jam with tape… as they don’t use it…
I understand that you liked the ease of using Bambu filament but it sounds like you have to stand guard when the filament comes to the end… Sounds a pain to me…

I did. But that does not change the fact that i will probably have to baby sit the next 6 rolls.

Regarding ordering, yeah, i’m looking for the next best filament. I liked theirs, did not had any issues so far, but maybe it’s time to test something else. Their price, when bought in bulk, is also good. $12.99. Hard to beat. Which is why i wanted to make another order, but now i’m having second guesses. They said the issue was fixed back in Aug, yet rolls in late Oct are still sold with the problem. So me ordering today might have another batch of 20 rolls that i have to baby sit, and i simply don’t want to do that anymore.

All they “fixed” was to adjust the taping method so now it’s just bad instead of egregiously bad. There’s still tape that stays attached to the filament and gets pulled into mechanisms. Heated drying of the filament may even make this worse by setting the tape adhesive.

Two suggestions - save and label your RFID tags. You can use them with other, non-RFID spools if you decide to go with other filament brands if they print ok using Bambu’s presets. You get the convenience of RFID without the boobytrapped filament spools.

You can also respool your Bambu filament and secure the filament tails however you want. There’s respooler models on MakerWorld.

That’s true about the respooler. I might even do that for the time being.

2 follow up questions:

  • what respooler model would you recommend
  • i know this is a loaded question and i’ll get different answers, but here goes: what other filaments are consistently good? I’ve seen people mentioning Sunlu, Overture, Polymaker and Prusament. Guess i need to test them all, one of each: PLA basic, pro, matte, petg, etc?

If your looking for good plastic I’d also add Hatchbox and ELEGOO, both of those worked excellently for me.
