Tape at the end of spool

Not having cardboard shows that Bambu doesn’t have a standard of their own yet. So far, I have received 3 different box sizes with different label types. I just pulled the last few inches out of spool that has the newer white tape that was not dried but was used within about a week after opening. The filament end definitely has glue residue from the white tape. I have resorted to opening each new spool and cutting the closest layer next to the white tape. This has resulted in only about 1 wrap of filament wasted but reassures me of trouble-free operation and without any glue. It’s very easy to cut as long as you don’t disturb the windings. I still have many unopened Bambu spools and enjoy being able to move them between different Bambu printers and AMS units with the benefit of RFID.

I like being able to chuck my cardboard spools [of elegoo] into the recycling, and know that it’s actually gonna get recycled. The folded untaped tags don’t jam, but they do scratch up your ptfe. Always seems to be “so close” to good solutions out there lol, someone will get it right

Every time the filament runs out, the AMS gets clogged. There’s a piece of tape at the end of the filament. The printer displays an error message, and the print has to be aborted! This is very annoying. I bought the AMS so that the print automatically starts from the next filament roll. :triumph:

This is my biggest gripe! I’ve just got a P1S and every issue I’ve had has to do with the crazy tape at the end of the spool! Waste of time and money (business) and causing mechanical issues! Instead of me trying to save filament, I’ve wasted more by failed prints. A great way to make customers waste money!

Welcome to the forum mate.
You do have choices:

  1. People have been using something like this to solve the problem. AMS Saver Snag Cutter V2.0 by Hexavalent MakerWorld: Download Free 3D Models
  2. Don’t use Bambu filament. Plenty of other filament manufacturers out there that have good filament and don’t use tape.
I’m sure there are more choices, but I think these two are the most popular.

I bought this roll of Bambu ABS in January or February 2025. I had about 10-15 feet of filament left after finishing the last print, so I decided to unreel it and see what the tape situation was.
