Needed some clear glue for a printing project and grabbed the wrong one from the hardware store…
Packing looked very similar and the stuff was cheaper, so I did not pay enough attention.
Back home I realised I bought ‘Tarzan’s Grip’ - OMG how can a glue with such a name be of any use…
Well, the stuff now turned into my favourite glue for plastic - go figure…
I looks and smells almost identical to the good old plastic glue Revel once had in every kit.
I literally melts into ABS if you use too much and it is very aggressive on PLA as well !
You can tell by how the glue takes on the PLA colour while smearing it around…
How good is it you wonder?
About as good as you would expect from Tarzan ROFL
Jokes aside though>
It seems to be a solvent based glue with little filler content, almost like paint remover with added stickiness.
As it does require for the solvents to evaporate you have to plan ahead…
Little joints are no problem, large areas to be glued together mean you have to work fast and use ‘two coats’ - the first quite thin and to soften the plastic, the second before the first dries off to provide proper bond strength.
I have not done any comprehensive breaking tests but saw no reason for it either as so far this stuff actually bonds exceptionally well.
Only downside I found is with larger areas and the actually curing times.
The glue dries off quite quick and while both surfaces still feel tacky it bonds well.
After that however comes the problem of the remaining solvents…
It can take 3 days or longer for large parts.
What is bad on one side is good on another > As the glue ‘melts’ the plastic both parts actually fuse together.
Only 5 bucks for the small tube, so if you see it just grab one and give it a try before getting large volumes.
Let me know if you want me to glue some little things to break and feel free to upload a model if not too big, still have a little bit of the glue left and have get more anyway…
