The difference in the download count between the model and the print profile

Hi,

I recently noticed a strange discrepancy in the download counters – both in the main one, which counts downloads of the model from all print profiles, and in the one under the specific print profile.

Why does my print profile show more downloads than the main counter? I’ve noticed this with practically every model I’ve used, but it’s the same for other users too. And it’s always just the number of downloads that differs. The number of prints is always the same.

What’s causing this? I get the impression that this discrepancy has only recently emerged, whereas before everything was correct. Has MW made any changes to how these downloads are counted?

I thought it might just be a delay and that, at the latest, by the next day one meter would ‘catch up’ with the other, but sometimes they both stay the same for several days and nothing happens.

While your on the topic of print profiles I have a question! Is it possible to see models that are public even if they don’t have a print profile? I’m asking because my model has been up for 17 hours and there are no views still… 5-Ring Fidget Toy (Print-In-Place) - Free 3D Print Model - MakerWorld

This is because some people download the model as an STL, not as a print profile, to use it on 3rd party slicers.

EDIT: My bad, I realised the print profile downloads are more than the total downloads. In this case, I have no idea.

hello everybody,

i also have a question over this topic…
hmm…

as example…
if i dont realy like to have multible/too much printprofils… and lets say, i have one theme idea that has multible models based on the theme idea…

so now i put, lets say… hmm… 10 different models into one profile…?
and every model is placed on one printplate..?
would it also count as a succsesfull print when somebody choose to print only one of these models?

more less likely or?

because on the other side… you can print also this one plate with “this model on it” succsesfull… hmm…

does anybody know something on this topic?

Uhh…

I think it would work, if you mean that the user deletes the other parts on the plate in the slicer.

If you mean that the user downloads the STLs separately then I don’t think it would count as a sucessful print.

Just curious, did you ever figure this out? I have a couple of models with the same behaviour right now. I was also thinking they would catch up, but then saw this post.

What do you mean by catch up? Do you mean the amount of prints?

As I mentioned in my first post, I’ve noticed this in all the other models available on MW as well. I still don’t know what’s causing it; I haven’t been able to find any information on the matter.

I’d have no idea either. I don’t use makerworld frequently, I just use Printables.

The number of downloads in print profiles not matching the total downloads of the model. By “catch up” I was refereeing to a possible delay in the system to total the counts.

Oh ok.

Yeah like I said, I have no idea of what’s going on. I’ve seen this everywhere too.

Hi Cancel-sky. I have a really stupid question, but being new to MakerWorld, I am not sure how to do this. I have downloaded the STL files from the main one. There is a small tweak that I want to do, and I see the correct one in one of the separate “Print Profiles”. It is from the same designer, but NOT included in the full “STL download” that I pulled. However, when I click on the Print Profile, I don’t see any option to “download the STL” from the separate Print Profile. Your thread is the closest I have found, and I feel stupid asking.

If you just want the STL, download the 3MF, open it in your slicer, and then export it as an STL.

I’ve had the same question so I put in an inquiry ticket to Bambu and here is their reply:

“Hi there,Thanks for contacting MakerWorld Team. Model download counts and print profile download counts are tracked separately on the platform. To prevent malicious downloading or printing behavior, the system applies certain limits on how many downloads or prints from a single user can be counted toward both model downloads and profile downloads. As a result, it is normal for the download counts of print profiles and models to show inconsistencies. Regarding the specific counting logic, we’re sorry that we’re unable to share more detailed information. That said, our team continuously reviews data and user feedback to improve the overall experience. This measure is currently applied universally across the platform to prevent abuse, and to maintain fairness and accuracy in the counting system. We apologize for any confusion or inconvenience this may have caused. We appreciate your contributions to our platform. If you require any further information or have any questions, please feel free to contact us. If you do not have further questions for this case, we will make the ticket as “resolved”. Should you have any further issues, you may reopen this ticket by replying directly to this email. Best regards,MakerWorld

They sort of explained something, but in reality, we still don’t know WHERE these discrepancies come from or WHY they occur.

Thanks for the info!

Also notice this since 2-3 months, very strange.
But usually I find more downloads for the profile compared to the model page.
Prints aare most times equal. With only one profile I would expect that
numbers to be equal or higher on the model side if someone downloaded the stl/step file.
But in fact it does not matter. BBL does whatever they want to. It is very unlogic
to have more prints than downloads. Anyway it was everytime the case that only one download was conbsidered.

This maybe be because nomally the print profiles update more often.

I think this is the answer right here. Sounds to me like the print profile DL number is tracking all downloads and the model is tracking only the legitimate downloads according to MW’s rules. Just my guess.

I believe you get the count on the user’s first download or print. Model prints and profile prints count separately and separate point awards for the overall model vs profiles.

I have also been struggling on the right tactic to post a themed model. I have a common case for one of my models and I make separate scenes that can go in the case. Each scene I have been uploading as a separate print profile, but I struggle with exposure, getting the photos of all the scenes viewed. Downloads and prints are always highest on my first profile.

hmm…

i ask about this topic in the makerworld wiki page fia post, but this posts dont stay online… it sems that this posts are going directly to them… i also ask about a “show model” like they have it for the printprofiles and for correct model instruction manuals and so on…

but still no answer or reaction about this… ??

hmm…?
