The purpose of "Boost"

First of all, don’t get me wrong, it’s not about your model or that you did something wrong, you shouldn’t have a bad conscience.
I do a lot of board games and other things, if you look at my account, I do different things, just complicated, HueForge. But I just don’t have a chance to advertise my models properly, they just go under.

Z. For example this model, sure it’s been loaded a few times and also printed, but nowhere near as much as your ball. It took me 3 weeks and over 200 printing times to get it the way I wanted it.

Maybe I’m not understanding something here (as a matter of fact I do think the boost system is too complicated for the casual user, the one that is not frequenting these forums), but why do we need to manually redeem boosts we receive? Why not just add those 11 points automatically right away? There’s nothing you can do with those things but turn them into points, so why is there this manual step of having to redeem them?

I took no offense to you using me as an example, quite the contrary, I agree boosts should ideally be used out of the trending list.

Simply put, simpler models are more likely to be printed en masse, and a system should be put in place to make more complex models thrive. That was (I’m assuming) the purpose of Boosts. So far that appears to have fallen flat apart from the other designers who understand the work it takes to model something like your game, and reward them with their 11 points accordingly.

It could even be that people are increasingly moving away from complex models that require them to print multiple plates or that simply require a significant amount of filament. There are many (too many?) models that aren’t really printable. As we’ve seen in the past, they’re often thrown onto Makerworld just to score points (some people didn’t even seem to have a printer, or in fact didn’t have one).

What are you supposed to think when you introduce “boosts” “1 boost = $1 gift card”, knowing full well that these are given to mainstream models that are already pushed, but you say: “Here is a boost opportunity, take advantage of it for challenging models that are complex and deserve recognition.” Isn’t there actually a smiley missing, like this:  ?

Looking at the first few dozen models on the Trends page, the number of boosts received is still relatively high, similar to the trend of downloads, likes and featured models.
Most people are still in the habit of giving “tips” to people who find it beautiful, novel, fun, funny, etc. (when they don’t know who to give it to), rather than really complex and time-consuming work.
A simple design receives more boosts than a complex entry (as far as I can see), which doesn’t seem to fulfill the original purpose and overlaps a bit with the original function of the points system.

What is the best way to change this, MW needs to think about it!

@MakerWorld

I would like a feature like this. I greatly appreciate the boost people have been giving me, but I’d like to pass some of those along to other designs which I greatly appreciate too. There’s certainly a lot of these boost that’ll go to current popular models, which is cool, and all that jazz, but I think to help make sure smaller time designers get some boost love too, that we should have the means to pass a boost on to someone else, if we see fit.

And it will be take it or double it  :joy:

All i know is that i am already receiving comments like “Hey, leave a boost if you downloaded my model”

Boosts are a way to get popular models more popular because the average user will download what is “fun” for them and won’t be rewarding other models or searching for models to boost. They have 14 days to spend that boost and they will spend it how they see it fit.

Nice idea, bad conception. Good prints everyone

I think the issue here is if transfers are allowed it will allow “nefarious” accounts to funnel boosts to a central account. Not allowing transfers and limiting how many boost can be given to an account pretty much stops this abuse.

And I think this is why there is a limit on how many boost can be given to an account/model. After awhile people won’t be able to boost the popular prints and will be forced to search out creators/new prints.

This system will take time to both equalize and for people to learn how they can spend there boosts. It’s not something you can get good data from in a couple days/weeks.

They could always add a verification on their end when a boost is resent to someone else. Could it be abused? Sure.

I also like the idea of boosts also not be monetary, but instead bring said model up the trending list for others to find. A literal boost in popularity.

That was foreseeable. Anyone who thought that wouldn’t happen is simply naive.

I love Shut the Box! Had it as a kid and introduced it to my son who is starting to learn math. I gave away my 2 boosts already, but I’ll give you one as soon as I get more. Great work BTW.

I wonder if the purpose of the Boost is like a Kudo to the designer of the model without the need to print it since they don’t need it.

I feel like verification is something that should be expanded. An overhaul in the reasoning behind the green check* to include any account that has a Bambu printer connected to it and frequent contributors to their community.

If you have a printer connected to your account then Bambu Labs already knows who you are. That should be instant verification. I have no idea who owns a BL printer and who doesn’t, but there are many people here who should have verified status with BL. I’ll use Basti85 as an example. A frequent poster on the forums, 36 total models uploaded his first 6 months ago and his latest 2 days ago. Pretty sure he isn’t a bot or plotting anything.

For those users who don’t own a BL printer and have no history on this site or another, then perhaps verification via phone number or some other method.

I feel like a large amount of the community can be verified. And once they are, those verified accounts should have the ability to buy and sell models for points. For those who want to go back to earning 25 points for every 25 downloads, it’s easy. Just sell your model for 1 point. Who doesn’t have 1 point? You can earn 50 just for rating profiles. If I want a model, losing 1 point isn’t going to stop me from downloading it.

*The Verification badge is designed for creators with accounts on multiple platforms to authenticate their accounts, as there have been incidents of fake accounts in the past.

I went through this verification with one of my other accounts on a platform and it was also successful. But there is no badge.

Is there a Boost leader board? for designers with the most boosts?

I could not agree more. Used them to appreciate designs that are great but only have a few downloads and prints.

Maybe MW should remind users of the intended purpose of boosts when they spend them.

They should add a pop up “Are you sure?” Like the one we have when redeeming them ^^
