I have the same “problem”.
I don’t go out of my way to print other designer’s models, but I don’t produce (Design, prototype, test, and all that) everything I have in life either. You can print other people’s work. It’s not much different from going to the local department store and getting something, in that you’re acquiring something potentially useful in your life that you yourself didn’t have to produce fully yourself.
It always strikes me odd this attitude, like some seem adverse to the idea of 3d printing anything other than what they themselves produce.
Regardless, you can give boost to design you find good, that you appreciate, that you want to encourage. One of the designs I gave a boost to was exactly that. It wasn’t something I wanted to print, but I appreciated the work that it was, and I wanted to encourage it. I don’t think Bambu would care. Only people that might care is someone on the forum that’s looking for a reason to complain.
This doesn’t have to be work. We can enjoy giving each other encouragement, and throwing love each other’s way for any reason.
I mean, com’on, @ProtoSpyre. I appreciate the work you put into your 4 to 1. It’s been one of my favorites. It’s the one I think I’d go with when that time comes I need one. I really like your wobble nozzle too, even though that’s not something I’d typically print up, it’s a fun print and I smile when it comes across my feed.
I mean I’m not “showing makerworld who’s boss” and protesting by withholding ‘boosts’ lol But this is what they stated… even though right before their eyes all these boosts be handed out as “extra likes”… it’s a joke.
The excuse of being a “new” company is out the window. Can only use that for so many instances of mess ups… the fact they stated they would work with R&D on a skew compensation feature yet it’s never been talked about or mentioned in over a year is absurd. But yeah I do understand most of these consumers only bought this printer because of “ABL, LiDaR, and AI…” oh don’t forget it prints fast too with defects
I understand where you’re coming from i do. Of course I’m being silly saying my boosts are about to expire and sorta want to stuff it to MW but it’s simply because of a broader picture than just MW and more so BL’s as a whole operation.
I will indeed honor designers before they expire. I enjoy many of the creators models on the platform that are also active on the forums don’t get me wrong. A big problem with myself also is I literally do this for a living so I’m surrounded by CAD even at home, this its the shop then going into work and having to focus even more.
I respect your words @Josh-3D keep that mindset. I feel MW turned a lot of makers into fiends when rewards became a thing reminds me of loot boxes in video games. . COD is ruined for me with that aspect now it’s wild also I appreciate your words on those projects, nothin creative but feels good to receive some feedback
That’s why I preach the love of design. At the end of the day, it’s us. It’s us sharing our work with others and furthering the vision of what 3d printing can be. It’s you and me, it’s the people that print our things. I have little to no relationship with Bambu, so what comes of my time here is the interactions spent with each other. Bambu as a company can crumble to dust, but we will all still be here.
I felt inspired to find a couple of designs that I admire, and I will give reasons for. They are things I haven’t printed, but I have reason to feel they deserve a boost. I would if I had more boost to give. I’m doing this because I’m tired of the doom and gloom.
warrell72’s Star Wars Storage Crate. One of the things that caught my eye on this was the internal structure. It’s fun, it adds interest and strength, and isn’t something people always consider. I think it was a nice touch. I like the tool trays too, the way they nest together. That’s a bold print in place hinge design, and I like it.
Pork3D’s Tic Tac Toe. I did a TicTacToe game myself, and so models as such always catch my eye, and this one is certainly no exception. It’s my favorite, and I like it more than my own model. I like the cap/hood design, it’s got more shape to it. The pieces and board are fun, and do a great job giving more character to a simple game.
Gwirad The Maker’s Springy Flower Bed. I’ve talked to this designer on the forum here before, and their latest release here caught my eye. They’ve been working on improving their game! It’s a fun looking model all around! They’ve got a photo booth going though, and gif’s for extra splash.
This has been my problem. There are very few things I print form others. I have used two but not sure where to do the other two. I won’t let them expire though.
I’m following @Josh-3D and will be appropriating them to general honest models. Someone redid a mesh on baby groot that made it vastly improved over the original designers model so that was worth it due to not having myself do it.
I gotta get out of the mindset of “DIY” having ADHD makes my brain scatter amongst projects so famous words I’m known for is “ill print that.”
I’ve given my boost to two models by a designer I don’t know and whose parts I haven’t printed. But I think he should continue with the things he creates. There’s more potential there, even if he’s in a niche area. So I’m giving my boost to motivate him to keep going. As his hobby is also material-intensive, he can convert the boosts into points.
I think and wish that everyone should and would use the boost wisely.
Best regards!
Yeah man. I mean, frankly, I don’t print a ton of stuff from Makerworld either. I’m a print as I need sort of fella, and like designing as ya’ll do, so tend to make my own things as needed too.
I make liberal use of the collections though. Stuff I like, stuff I want to print, stuff that inspires me through some aspect of their design or presentation. It’s my own curated version of Makerworld! Even if my download que hasn’t been stressing the pipeline, there’s still a lot to admire and encourage.
I think of the boost system as like Makerworld giving us the power in our hands to help show support for the designs we best feel exemplify this platform, and the hard work of the designers. Algorithms can’t do that work. It doesn’t know how to see some little known designer with a barely caught the eye but brilliant design, to give it a boost. It doesn’t know the difference between a 1kg box and a 1kg masterpiece of plastic. We do though. We do.
I wish the boost had a little more power to it. Feels more like a pop rocket vs something that’s gonna blast us off to the moon. It is a start though in a direction that, although I wont say is right, I do like it more than the old system. I like it because it shifts that power somewhat into the hands of individuals. I just wish it had a little more of an impact on those smaller time designers, as it’s fair to say that 11 points on it’s own isn’t much.
Would love to see boosted models actually be boosted to the front page for visibility or just an entire page/section for currently boosted models.
Ohhhh I like that. Some sort of recently boosted section, or some mix of boosted+rising (That way already wildly popular models don’t take over the boost page) That would give a lot more thrust to the whole boost concept. I mean, 11 points wont lift you off very far, but if it also helped rocket it to some new eyes, that could be a blast.
@MakerWorld, so basically a section for recently boosted models, but is also filtered to models that are just rising in popularity, so like already trending models with 100 boost aren’t on the list. Those already popular models will already appear in trending and featured, so this new section would be more like a community driven spotlight of lesser known models.
Yeah I like that. It would be cool to have a top 100 boosted model.
Do boosted models move up when you search for models? Like I have a bunch of card deck boxes, would my most boosted models move up to the top if someone searched “deck box”?
its a bit weird the models that are being trending everyday… i personally think that makerworld should work out the trending models as they are mostly not even attractive most of the times, useless or just totally not good models not well designed, models with only like 30 or 15 downloads or even 60 downloads imo should not even be trending as they are low in DL and cannot be popular just because a couple of users download them it needs to be trending as a trend not as a most downloaded bot withing a couple of days. I think most models should be reviewed by users or meaby just at least be popular by ratings or comments left on the models ? pictures left on the models as well could lead to give more views
I’m still trying to figure out how to get boost points to give out? It benefits the artists you give them to correct?
Hi there, MakerWorld responded in a comment on the Boost FAQ chat.
For what it is worth as little extra detail was actually provided.
Something I’ve done with my boosts is returning the favor when someone sends me a boost, also, I’ve learned from thingiverse and other model repositories is that a more effective way for me to stop downloading things I may or may not print is to throw out a like.
If I like it a lot, and may not even print it, I’ll reward the effort and design by boosting it, keep the ecosystem alive.
