The Walking Table by Josh3D! Featuring CyberBrick!

Hello everyone!

I think my fellow designers have really expressed it well, when talking about the benefits and excitement of this new R/C hardware. I’m not even entirely sure what I could add that hasn’t already been expressed. I encourage all of you to go check out the other threads posted up here under the CyberBrick section of the forum, to scope out their excellent models and thoughtful write ups.

I’m very excited about the hardware here, and the potential creations that will come of it. A few have questioned why Bambu didn’t just partner with an existing hardware manufacture. The thing is, is this, this is ours! It’s built for us, and tailored for us.

I’m no stranger to electronics, R/C projects, all this kind of stuff. One of the big issues I had in the past was accessibility. I’m comfortable enough with electronics, but being able to source components, have the skills and knowledge to assemble it all. It can be a lot. There’s been a number of projects I wanted to do, but just sourcing the electrical components was a huge pain. There’s one project I started, and the design is awesome, but the designer didn’t provide anything for the electronics beyond mounts for the motors. I’m going to have to completely come up with something on my own, and it’s frustrating.

Basically, point being. This is a product for us. For us designers, it gives a ton of flexibility and expandability. For users, it gives them a one stop shop for all the key hardware, and that hardware can be taken from project to project as one see’s fit.

The walking table has been a fun little project. It’s difficult to just focus on one idea though, and I’ve already got a list of projects I want to finish, that utilize this hardware. I can’t wait for the release of the hardware, when I can share these models with you too.

Here’s a few more photos, and a link to Instagram where I posted a little video if it walking. I’m still trying to dust off my photography skills a little, haha.

My remote control is inspired by industrial remote controls. I’m not sure how well it fits with the concept of the walking table, but I don’t know, I just thought it was cool and wanted to do it. @ozarkexpeditions touched on this, about the controllers. I think one of the neat things about this is really, you’re not tied to any one particular controller. It’s going to be interesting to see just what sort of custom and universal controllers people will come up with.

Thanks to @BambuLab and @CyberBrick for inviting me along this journey with them.

A little bonus. Here’s the first prototype print for the legs! I was thinking a lot about the aesthetic design early on too. I wanted to make something that’d be easy to print, but still have a lot of shape and form.

When I was thinking about the colors for the final print, I was thinking, what’s going to look the best when creeping out of the shadows at you. Hehe.

Nice strandbeest

I like the clean bearings, very well designed!

EDIT: Thinking about what you said…Any xbox or playstation controller would probably be the next step

(not logitek…bad joke phew) then the multi button and setup could be used to hmm…

Those octo spiders? maybe take it in that direction…a 4 way walker ha! the extra buttons could be tied to the top table part too, magnetic accessories?

You can also get mag powered 4 pin wiring as well like smart watches charge with, that would pair nice with the accessory top you could have. Gridfinity top? then power each cube with the mag pins to allow powered magnetic drop in…

This is quite the nice project really! Lots to explore very nice work here!

Haha, I’m trying. I have the video on my instagram. I’m not super great at doing videos though. I must admit.

This would be pretty cool actually. I’ve thought about stuff like this a lot over the years. Not sure if I’m skilled enough to pull that one off though.

They do have a mag-adapter like that; although it’s only two wires. That could be cool though. Mine is mostly a table for bringing you drinks, but a mount for something could be fun. Ha.

it looks pretty cool, but i’m already imagining what could be on top instead of the plain flat table  i’m sure we’ll be seeing some crazy stuff being carried around by those legs

Only a two prong mag? so…like + & - for voltage? sounds like enough to me

I can’t wait for these bricks, RC stuff is a very sweet hobby but technic and mindstorm stuff is huge for a reason - this really seems like a meet in the middle style affair modernizing both worlds in a sense.

@Josh-3D - would it be possible to post a picture (if you are allowed from the NDA) of the entire part kit you got to play with as a tester? Would be neat to see (nobody else in your gang has posted this either in their threads) what you had to work with in designing your awesome table.

I thing the next stage of this would be the RC community coming in and modding their current motors and RC plethora of gadgets into the brick-formatting expanding the entire electronic side by a huge margin. Then the block printed stuff will have to evolve to larger more robust to support the bigger engines and parts yada yada.

Very exciting. Hurry up and take my money!

My thoughts exactly. Many years ago I had some Traxxas RC trucks and really enjoyed that as a hobby so it will be great to revisit that, but in a slightly different way this time.

Seeing as shops like these exist I think the market potential is huge (not affiliated with them in any way).

I also think this might be a great toolkit for schools, libraries or any other place where you want to teach people about electronics and 3D printing.

Any possibility of uploading it to YouTube? Your Instagram profile seems to be private.

:eyes: Nice! Obviously not me, but one of the influencers that has partnered with Bambu. Some of their other shorts showing the assembly of the controller, might be insightful for some.

My instagram should be public! So I’m not sure. Hopefully the above video will give a delightful taste though.

Ahh, Traxxas  I’ve had a few of their trucks, and still have one of them. Love that brand.

The kit I got was pretty much the same kit they are offering on the kickstarter. Mainly just used the electrical components from the base kit. Otherwise, I used hardware I had from the Maker’s Supply store.
