Thee Battleship competition is full of non-battleships

I’d like to be “that person” and complain about this.

The large majority of the entries are not battleships, which has a specific definition, and is not the same as “(large) warship”.

Under a loose definition, the age of sail “first rate” ships with the 3+ decks of guns could count as “line of battle ships”. These days it refers to the primary gun-armed, armored ships from the last century (and no, speedboat with armor and machine gun does not count). The last battleship to be constructed was HMS Vanguard for the (UK) Royal Navy just after World War 2 and the best preserved museum ships of the that type would be the Iowa-class of the US Navy.

Otherwise, please ask yourself, “is this thing on makerworld actually a battleship?”.

They won’t care in my experience.

Blatant disregard for the theme will be removed only after a community member reports each individual one.

Close, and they will let it stay. A boat is likely close for this one.

Report one and see what happens, maybe they have improved, but they often appear to feel “more in competitions is good for BL”.

I was going to complete my battleship board game a fourth in a new series I am about to share until I realised so many had been added to this contest it wasn’t worth sharing yet another one.

I have been on a tirade reporting those things. Really pisses me off that makerworld is not doing anything about this.

I would even argue that you can stretch the rules a little bit.

But at the least, speedboats, ocean liners, and pirate ships are not battleships.

No, but if you never complain there will never be change

I’ll respectfully disagree. However don’t let that stop you. Good luck.

I hope I can do at least a little bit. At least call people out for being idiots.

I recall public shaming worked last time… there was a contest about half a year ago… don’t remember which one… and a handful of people created “public collections” of models that where irrelevant to the contest and then posted them here.

Many people then reported the same model and occasionally. The @-sign was used here on the forum to really make them notice… not saying it’s the right way, is just something that has happened before. And, let’s face it… it does say “Master Challenge” so I can understand your frustration.

Shenanigans in a contest?!

Well, I never!

I often do

Sure they are

You’re battling the government trying to stop you from pillaging the seas

You’re battling to get to the Florida coast with your cocaine shipment before drug enforcement catches you.

You’re battling the toilet after eating at the buffet

There’s a battle everywhere, if you know where to look.

More seriously,

I think this is just about what you can do. Every contest has a bunch of background noise, and I think it’s just the nature of things. Even if you remove a bunch of stuff, more are gonna come along and throw new irrelevant entries onto the pile. They don’t matter in the grand scheme of things though because quality work will still stand out, regardless of the noise.

Here is my collection of irrelevant battleship contest submissions

(78/327) x 100% = 23.85%

Almost a quarter of them. And I dont even think that makerworld is loading all of the models for me too look at. I only counted about 200 but it says 327.

Battleship also applies in sci-fi, it doesn’t only refer to naval vessels, yes there is a class of naval vessels but any armed ship fit for battle could quality as a battleship

I mean just look at the game battleships, there is only 1 there that qualifies as a “battleship”

Hate to break it to you but most of those are battleship related

Like what?

The Toilet Paper Ship?
All the pirate ships?
The Fidget Spinners?
The speed dial?
The speedboats?
The “war benchy”?
The Titanic / Britanic / Olympic Models?
The stuff from star wars?
The planes?
The coaster?

Please tell me which ones. I was being very lenient picking them out

Its a ship

I mean do you think battleships were the first large scale combat vessels? pretty narrow minded there bud

You mean the one shaped like the literal steering wheel from a pirate ship?

You mean the thing modelled after this literal thing? Engine order telegraph - Wikipedia

You mean the benchy armed with battleship turrets?

Which one, i see 2, and both are naval adjacent

You seem very stuck up on an extremely narrow definition of what counts as battleship related, but that seems like a personal problem we can’t fix for you

The rules even specify not everything has to be a “battleship” specifically anyway

Are you saying literally any ship is fine for the contest? Why would they just not make the contest “Master Challenge: Ships”?

Pirates did not battle, they fought. That was not the primary purpose. Pirate ships do Piracy. Warships do war. It is in the name, this is not that hard to understand. Pirate Ship vs. Warship - What's the Difference? | This vs. That

See above. Pirate ships are not battleships or warships.

What specifically does that part do that makes it a battleship? Are you saying that a part of any boat would qualify? Is a cat the same thing as a dog because they both have ears?

I still call that one irrelevant because one of the print profiles is just a normal Benchy and you cannot report a print profile for being irrelevant.

How does naval adjacent mean battleship?

Making comments like that will get you nowhere in life. The definition is narrow for a reason. You can not stretch a definition to mean what ever you want. Then it is not a definition.

Please show me in the rules where it says that. When I read the theme it gives 3 distinct options…

  1. A historic warship
  2. A futuristic reimagining of battleship
  3. A tabletop board game

Definitions are the one constant between both of our trains of thought. You can not change a definition because you dont like it.

I mean, agree to disagree, bambu clearly don’t agree with you either if they aren’t removing them

Take the hint, the rules literally say not everything has to be a battleship, this is not rocket science dude

Are you being intentionally daft? Did you read anything I had to say?

Show me where this is said in the rules? What are you reading that makes you think that is true?

If you cannot acknowledge simple definitions, then you are part of the problem.

Based on this thread and other threads, you are in the minority with that opinion.

Anyone else remember the “This isn’t a Kit card!?!” debacle? Very similar vibes in this thread.

No, please explain (or link to a thread)

The thread(s) were from circa March 2024. Basically it boiled down to a forum member interpreted the rules of the “Kit Card” contest a specific way and they were very upset that there were entries that didn’t conform to how they thought the contest should be.
