Just,
BBL’s position regarding the new update is unacceptable. I have an X1c that I do not want to update, if they update it without my consent or disable my use, I will have to reconsider a global complaint. Obviously I am nothing more than a grain of sand on a beach, but here there are many of us who think alike. At the moment my material purchase list is going to be postponed, the plan for an A1 mini too, and we are going to wait which way Bambu wants to take, because I am not willing to waste my money on a paperweight product.
A REAL BADASS MOVE!
If you want to raise “security levels”, let the customer choose what level of “security” they want. Security checks in local mode are a nogo!
How about the ability to root the printer with the new firmware?
And what’s next? Foreign Filament is insecure so the printers will only work with Bambu Filament?
Feels like i’ve bought a HP-printer.
I am thinking about to sell everything and go with Prusa!
Very unsatisfied

Just a thought… I see plenty of people across various threads chiding others “why are you upset? You knew what you were signing up for! BL was never going to be open source or whatever.”
This is technically correct (the best kind of correct).
BL never said anything about open source etc.
BUT
There a few ways to go about the proprietary & closed ecosystem, one being straddling the line. Which is what BL seemed to signal in the past, with lan mode, promise of 3rd party access to APIs, authorizing x1Plus and its custom firmware wrapper, panda touch, etc.
It made it seem like “sure, it’s a mostly-closed ecosystem, but it’s not 3rd-party hostile”
This is why I decided that my next printer will be whatever BL announces in Q1.
With this move they are signaling that things were too relaxed and open for their comfort. I am not too surprised though, after watching how some of the MW rule changes were implemented as well.
All of this adds up to a rather unfortunate reality that they are planning to keep tightening the screws for a while.
Oh well.
But Bambu Studio doesn’t support per object flow ratio setting and Orca does. As k-factor per filament option. Ans so and so.
Orca is better than BS.
Yes you can, you have to make multiple filaments that all use the same AMS slot, then for each of those use profiles with different flow ratios. It is more difficult but still doable.
I’ve owned a dozen 3D printers over the last many years. Started printing in the dark days, and bought a X1C a couple years ago and it changed my life. It turned 3D printing from a hobby where I screwed around with making printers work, to a hobby where I designed and printed parts. It was magical.
I bought 3 Bambu printers in a row, and fully bought into the ecosystem.
While waiting for the ‘next big thing’ from Bambu, I started to look around. The last 2 printers I bought were not Bambu printers.
Here’s the secret: They’re as good and reliable as the Bambu printers.
I switched my Bambu printers to LAN mode about 6 months or more ago, because Orca supports all of the printers I own, and I really didn’t use the Handy app much so I didn’t lose much by switching.
I was really looking forward to what Bambu has coming up next, but honestly, without LAN mode integration the way I’ve been using it, I won’t be.
I have limited room for printers. As the technology matures and my non-updated bambu firmware begins to grown farther behind, I’ll populate my shelves with printers that fit my workflow.
Did you do any research when buying it, It’s your first printer right?
It’s closed source as it always was from the start. you can’t change the firmware (without voiding warranty) and your software choices were always limited to bambu and orca
Spare parts are all available so that’s not an issue
But you bought a closed source printer in 2024 and now you’re deciding this is a bad choice and you should leave?
Do you even know what this change will affect?
The main thing is that third party integrations will only be able to monitor and not control your printer, so if you’re in the dozens of people using home assistant to actually control their printer, you now can’t do that
The other major change? Well as it currently stands, Bambu Slicer uses a Bambu networking service to communicate with your printer, and so does orca slicer
The Bambu networking service is being replaced by Bambu-connect
Orca will still be able to do everything it does, SoftFever (the developer for orca) has said they requested specific permission for orca to talk directly to the printers and Bambu has denied that request, and it must be done through Bambu connect
So what will change for you?
Right now you can use your printer to print with Bambu slicer or orca slicer, and you can monitor or control it with home assistant
After the update you can use your printer to print with Bambu slicer or orca slicer, and you can monitor (not control) it with home assistant
X1Plus is an entirely different kettle of fish as it already requires you to void your warranty and stall custom firmware to use, which means you can still use orca and MQTT for HA
So, as direct access for Orca Slicer is now also off the table (see here FW 1.08.03.00 from Bambu WILL BREAK ORCASLICER for X, P and A series · Issue #8063 · SoftFever/OrcaSlicer · GitHub)
I just put my A1 back into LAN-Mode and completely blocked its Internet Access on my network. First and last Bambu machine, never going to recommend this anywhere again.
@exen904 So it can still talk with it through Bambu-connect
Like it currently does through the bambu networking service?
Also omg this is my quote of the day
“Completely blocked its internet access” sort of implies completely blocking its internet access. Does Bambu-connect violate the laws of physics?
Yeah sure because why would I want to not use another useless tool, that is absolutelty not needed especially if in LAN mode, and lose all monitoring that is currently in OrcaSlicer.
I dont care what they do with the cloud stuff, but everything that is closing down on the local connection, which is happening, is just a huge gtfo for me.
@Marvelicious I dont care about Bambu Connect, never going to use it. My printer is offline-offline now, not just a GUI switch that I cant trust to not do anything more.
I definitely noticed that a bunch of people got printers for Christmas!
Mind if I steal this line? It’s what I’ve been trying to say, but had a hard time articulating it
Damn just finished the rest of your post, can we be best friends?
The part that gets to me the most is the slippery-slope argument. I hate it when it’s used in any context (according to a lot of people on the internet, the fact that I can legally marry another man is evidence of the coming apocalypse)
I get why people are frustrated but, as you said, they want this product to be something it isn’t, and never really was
They are currently beta testing a Bambu farm app. So I kinda think it’s intentional that they are closing down other farm management tools
I can understand that change is frustrating, but this route is also pretty industry standard
Edit: sorry @Josh-3D i think the wrong post was a reply to you vs @StreetSports
This! It’s the argument Apple tried to use why you’re not allowed to “side load” apps, because security. When in fact it’s we just they want 30% of every app transaction so they won’t let you bypass it.
You absolutely could have third-party integration securely using API, keys or certificates. Here’s a financial incentive to lock it down. Currently only the X series offers “AI” detection. This is an expensive printer though, so one might purchase one of their cheaper printers and use a third party service that does “AI” monitoring which eats into potential sales. Takeaway third party monitoring and now you have no choice but to purchase the more expensive printer.
Apple also extremely does not care what you run on a Mac, and that’s a much closer example to a 3D printer than a phone is.
But even if you consider iOS a viable comparison–I can install absolutely anything I want on my phone and Apple won’t stop me in any way. I just can’t install anything I want on your phone without using the App Store. Which is a completely different kettle of fish to “I want to use something I wrote” or “I want to use an open-source program”.
It being common does not make it defensible.
You don’t have to help normalize bad behavior. You just can choose to not do that. The devil doesn’t need advocates.
So I guessed right. Seeking higher profits.
My comment was more around a company giving a public reason which is usually b******* and the real reason behind closed doors is usually money.
Same boat. We’re used to being treated like this. But when it tampers with our ability to use some expensive hardware, that’s a lot more painful, so it fuels responses like this thread.
I’m highly disappointed in some of the community here who, as long as it doesn’t impact them personally too much, seem to have zero regard for the impact to others in these situations.
Corporations (in general, not just this one) are not being coerced into this stuff.
They choose to:
- Limit our freedom to use hardware (that we “own”) how we want
- Collect data (or outright “spy”) on us, completely disregarding the risk to our safety and financial security that mass data collection inherently creates
- Remove features and capabilities that were available when we entered into our initial financial contract (purchase)
- Start charging money for, or control the use of features that were initially available at the time of purchase
It seems BL chooses to adopt a number of these disturbing trends.
I kind of get when people are indifferent to this stuff. I think it’s lazy and short sighted, but I can at least understand that. But what I cannot understand is why some people feel the need to actively defend these trends, drowning out the voices of those of us who are willing to fight against these things for everyone’s benefit.
Consider that perhaps you’re not helping to make the world a better place by defending this abusive behavior.
Exactly! Nailed it. Especially where this is a change, not the original situation.
