Thank you.
I’ll still have questions and opinions, I’m just not going to argue anymore about the authorization thing because I’m not qualified. I’ve been kind of holding off until I heard from two particular YouTubers: Clough42 and Print Farm Academy. I requested their input several days ago. They both make their living in worlds that involve just this kind of thing and they are both shining examples of what right-thinking looks and sounds like (at least to me). Still waiting on Clough 42, but here’s what PFA had to say:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENnfaZTL4aY. It relieved a lot of stress for me and maybe it will for others.
Are any of them network security experts or have they consulted actual network security experts? This would be relevant to “security” aspect. Gabe from slant3d made the error of not being expert in the field of security and assuming security = good.
First thing that comes to mind are actors - they can sound and look very convincing playing doctors and lawyers yet have no idea about relevant field, so just because someone sounds good, doesn’t mean it’s right.
So, basically he reads through what Bambu says, doesn’t analyze any of the analyses pointing out the flaws.and misstatements made by Bambu, and ignores the direct contradiction between their PR statements and their legal Terms of Service. Also between their claim to be working with the Orcaslicer folks, which the Orcaslicer folks denied and now Bambu has backpedalled on.
He does a good job at knocking over strawmen. Bambu printers were never open source. No ■■■■. No one ever claimed they were or were promised to be. But they DO currently allow 3rd party interfaces, which they clearly say will be shut down going forward unless authorized by Bambu. My printer, my PC. No reason. I didn’t lease a.print service from Bambu, I purchased a printer.
Please read Unauthorized Bread by Cory Doctorow to understand what their approach is a huge problem, even for “just want it to work” consumers. A free excerpt from UNAUTHORIZED BREAD, my latest audiobook | Cory Doctorow's craphound.com
You missed one “there is absolutely nothing to see here”
I watched first 3 minutes and 30 seconds. So far it seems actually worse than Slant3D’s. Starts with strawman arguments, reads straight from newest at the time of recording version of blogpost, doesn’t acknowledge changes to the post itself and how it was presented to people who rightfuly reacted, when going over Bambu Connect he just said “should be nice when it comes out”
I paused when he stopped “reading” the post and said that some people “have been reading between the lines”… Does the video get better or is it worse amateur hour than Bambu Connect “security” at the time of release?
Also, before continuing I checked the comments – one user was pointing out issues with the video and the response was:
Is this your
?
Shall I watch the video further than 3:30?
Sir, no need to translate I speak several languages, and English is quite easy.
Thank you for checking out my models
Regarding choosing who to trust - unfortunately in the era of “content creators” a lot of them chose the path of speaking in a way that sounds good but isn’t actually correct or at least well researched due to time constrain of “must release content!” Finding trustworthy voices in time-pressured environment, where you don’t know creator’s actual background and expertise is very hard if not impossible, so my general idea is to not trust them by default.
And to answer your question: I work in a domains/websites/cloud sphere of tech. I’ve done my share of securing services that are available 24/7 from outside world. (plus degree in computer science does help in knowing a thing or two about stuff)
I just got A1 already got P1S and build plate A1 is bit trickier than P1S…
For the sake of fairness I decided to watch the full vid…
The whole 11 minutes and 22 seconds he reads just the 2 bambu blog articles, does no research on the subjects, admits his background is in industrial 3d printing (completely different beast), insults technically minded people, ignores consumer rights aspect of this…
In the comments he fails to engage with valid criticism and all the comments “hearted” by him are the comments thanking him for “healthy perspective” which is… Silly to say the least.
Side note: he has a bambu afiliate link and makes (a little) money from bambu sales. I’m sure that has no impact what so ever on his stance.
To sum it up, I’ve said this after watching first 3mins and 30 sec:
After watching whole video, I need to say: this IS way worse than Slant3D’s.
Side note: he has a bambu afiliate link and makes (a little) money from bambu sales. I’m sure that has no impact what so ever on his stance.
Lol that’s all you really need to know.
NBR has talked about how fickle Bambu is if you don’t glaze their products. His affiliate was taken away cause he didn’t overly praise their printers in his review and he has admitted he has made several thousand $ with the affiliate link and he only has around 50k subs I think.
I know Johnny. You’re not wrong. It was comforting to me because I’m 79 years old and don’t want to see the pleasure of 3D printing with my BBLs go down the drain. There’s not a damn thing I can do about it anyhow except to bitch and moan.
For the first few years of his farm, he used nothing but Prusa. He gave BBL a try and decided to switch over, for whatever reason. He has to crank out product every day in the form of vacuum attachments for almost any power tool on the market. Read into what you will.
Don’t worry as much - if you enjoy them as they are now, not much should change for you in case they go with wrong approach.
However, even if you don’t use Orca, don’t use any 3rd party accessories that will be rendered useless and so on - I’d recommend to still be on the consumer’s side of things. That’s all
As for current product lineup, Bambu expressly stated that they have no plans to introduce subscriptions or limit 3rd party filaments.
That’s cool.
The only thing that really sucks is the LCD display. And it works good enough for what I do. I’m not going to order the touch display.
Do you actually live in Poland now?
two addendums to that:
- no plans yet
- except when they have reasons to believe there might be security risks (not clear for whom) involved or…other actual or supposed sec-related issues they reckon are probably pending to happen
Other than that, you should (theoretically) be safe (?!?)
Thanks,xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
See… the change does impact you a tiiiiny little bit: if it wasn’t for it, you could’ve ordered the touch display from bigtreetech and enjoy benefits of big screen I mean - you still can as long as you don’t update firmware (or if bambu comes to senses and won’t introduce security the wrong way)
Yes, with occasional visits to other countries
well the screen was never supported, even bigtreetech does not guarantee future compatibility, it’s just exploiting a hole Bambu didn’t know it had to close Bambu was and will continue to be a closed hardware and firmware company, I’m fairly sure they left those “doors open” by accident, not by design lol
there are so many options out there that cater to those open approaches, why not got for one? the RatRig’s seem to be amazing, and are open, why insist that Bambu needs to change their business model to meet a segment of users wishes?
It’s all very unrealistic in my opinion, but to each his own
Usually no company actually “supports” 3rd party accessories, but simply “allows them to be” because otherwise community blowback would be… Oh.
Well, MQTT(S) is pretty standard protocol. Insisting it should go through cloud is unusual (pronounced in this case: stupid). There’s no need to block it from operating. Or rather, pretending that’s a security update is lying
Imagine if such approach was present anywhere else, say… cars. Oh you’d like new stereo? No can do, only ones approved by Ford and installed at authorized dealership. If you like to tinker with your car you should’ve bought project car!
This change, if it’s about security, is done wrong way. Proper security can and should be implemented in a proper way. I’ll just leave this here:
My very realistic opinion is that if they actually want security, they should hire security experts.
well i’m fairly sure that on modern cars any meaningful change is indeed locked to the brand (then there are people who hack the ECU, but that’s not supported or even tolerated by the brands) I don’t think you can change a stereo on a Tesla, but hey i might be wrong
you want them to deploy a solution that meets your goals, not theirs as a company, so yeah i don’t know what to say to that. We as consumers have a lot of power, when a company doesn’t meet our criteria we move on and go to another.
I also don’t like that i can’t upgrade my Mac’s RAM or internal hard-drives, but it was my conscious choice to purchase it
Anyways i will continue using Bambu, i’m good with cloud, if they change their minds and decide to open, it’s fine by me (but i doubt it will happen, especially with the next gen)
