Time to reinvent the filament wiper

So I guess everyone who prints with PETG has encountered the issue of the wiper not wiping the filament off the hot end properly and dragging PETG strings across the print. I get notified of a possible spaghetti detection, after checking the print which is fine, I notice a clump of filament on the nozzle that the wiper failed to wipe off. Are bambulab going to improve the wiper? I found this great improvement on 3D printables: Printables

After watching all the rave YT vids on the 1XC, and upgrading from my Prusa Mini+, I was expecting magic.

Then I tried printing PETG.

+1 on this.

I tried it and have gone back to the original wiper. You’ll find filament gets stuck in the bristles and then it stops working as a cleaner. Taking from what Prusaslicer does, I now do a single layer skirt line which gets rid of any excess filament.

The idea of using a brass bristle brush to clean the nozzle has been around for a long time. I would assume the Bambu engineers had tried this at some point during the design iteration and abandoned it for the current setup.

The only thing that would work better than the factory setup would be a larger diameter ptfe tube, but that would also raise costs.

I wonder if mixed solution, like a rotary brush would give good results.

Even if you would somehow perfectly wipe the nozzle you still have the oozing issue with PETG.

A skirt line around the print before printing is the best sollution to get rid of all blobs etc.

I had an idea of a rotary brush but then opted for having a bit of material fabric on the wiper that would grip the filament but would suede or fireproof material work better?

How about the silicon wiper on Printables?

I agree that the brush on the wiper looks good, but as mentioned, it will soon need cleaning. The ‘excess’ filament is more of a problem with runny filament such as PETG and TPU so perhaps the nozzle should be cooled further so it stops oozing after it has been wiped on the plate?

The brush would work if it was kept heated to above the melting temp of the plastic. It’d wipe the nozzle and then the plastic would slowly drip off the bristles. But if the hot plastic gets smeared through the brass bristles and cools, it will turn in to a solid block of plastic and brass and the nozzle will not tolerate being pushed through that kind of obstruction without damage…

PETG doesn’t ooze or string very badly at all if you really, really, really dry it out. Nylon is the same way. Both filaments are very hydrophilic. They’ll go from fully dried to soggy wet in the space of time of just a few hours, and then require a day to dry out again. The AMS does not keep it dry enough. But when I’m religious about (re)drying it, PETG and Nylon both print about as well as any other plastic.

Hi, do you have a link to the silicon wiper?

I used a silicon wiper for years on my Geetech A20M ( a really really bad stock machine :slight_smile: ), but with some mods and the addition of a purge bucket it was good enough to print part with two materials with good transition between materials.

But this small red silicon strip was doing a pretty good job, it was completly slipped off my mind, thanks for the reminder @jse, definitly something to try.

Noticed in Lidl today (in UK) that they have the small brushes back in stock. I use these to wipe the nozzle manually before a print, although you have to be quick!

I’ve ordered the 2mm silicone from Amazon UK, I run a business called Moose3d.co.uk and although ideally, I would like to walk away from the printer after setting to run a print, I can’t risk it at the moment as filament just messes up the print when wiper fails to wipe. I’d be a little cautious when using wire bristles although the hot end is hardened steel, I wouldn’t want to scratch the nozzle, but I can just imagine you trying to get the hot end as it goes round probably not on ludicrous mode lol - I’ll try out the silicone and let you know how it goes.

Fuhget the spaghetti detection! We need the failed-wipe detection!

I have 2 X1C and have really had any of these problems.
