Tips on printing supports

Hi all,

Im printing a hinged part, i want to print them standing up so i get perfect holes as this is where the pivot pin goes to hold the hinged parts together. But in doing so i need support enabled. When i remove the supports then obviously theres some clean up required to get the 2 parts to fit together nicely.

Also you will see on the middle part there is bit sticking out about a third of the way up, this is to locate the piece accuratly in an aluminium rail. This also needs support and then clean up to get to fit. When i print a test piece but orientated so it doesnt need support it fits perfectly.

Does anyone have any tips on how i can print these so that they fit as intended without the clean up afterwards?

Thanks

Dan

On youtube there’s a channel called “Slant 3D” where some of the vids deal with designing parts for 3d printing instead of having mind locked on the designs that would normally be injection-molded. It’s also about avoiding situations like this.

If you need to have the part be printed without supports you’d need to redesign it or if you have AMS you can try multi-material printing with dedicated support filament that doesn’t leave marks.
