Transparent PetG printing tips for unenclosed printers

Hey, I developed my own transparent PetG print profile for unenclosed printers such as the P1P and A1 because the existing profiles online never quite worked for me. Below I will describe what I did but also why and what I learnt so that perhaps you could apply it to your own experiments.

  • I print with a .4mm nozzle at .2mm layer heights. While existing research suggests .1mm layers, that takes too long to be practical. Print times are too long and I don’t have a drybox to print out of, just a food dehydrator (which i don’t care to modify). To compensate for the increase in gaps i use a flow rate of 102%.
  • To manage debris build-up over the layers of solid infill i use an acceleration value of 125mm/s2. This definitely does make a difference through my trial and error, to make sure the filament settles into the layer at the seams between wall and infill.
  • To cool the filament slowly with an unenclosed printer I reduced print speed from 20mm/s to 15mm/s, and reduced temp down to 260C. If i didn’t reduce temperature as well it would introduce burning/bubbling and create more debris on solid infill layers. The print speed and temp may be possible to adjust more, but these values worked for me.
  • To handle printing of parts with short layer times i used the following fan setup to minimal clouding effect

  • I also dried my filament (Overture PetG) for at least 24 hrs as I occasionally still found bubbles at 8+ hours. A long while ago I dried it for 48 hrs and that also helped but I haven’t repeated this test to confirm whether that is true.
  • Aligning the direction of solid infill had a big effect on transparency through the sides of the part and should be a key consideration with solid infill transparent printing.

I hope this helps anyone trying to reign in their profiles, also giving the object a clear coat spray can slightly help the transparency.
