I put a Bambu Lab Basic PLA refill in a new Marswork plastic spool and dried it in a Sunlu S4 filament dryer set to PLA 50C. The filament expanded in the spool and now it won’t fit in my AMS 2 as it’s 74mm wide now. I did not keep the Velcro straps on the filament in the dryer. Is this anything anyone else has had happen with these spools? Thanks.
Hard to understand what you are saying.
Are you sure the filament has expanded?
it is not more likely that the marswork spool has come apart either because the lock failed, or it was not locked?
You might be able to close it up again and rewind the filament; otherwise you can respool onto a new spool. Or just run it through the external filament port outside of the AMS. But check the spool’s lock first, you don’t want the side falling off.
Sorry, here is what I’m seeing. I really want to like this spool system but not sure about being able to dry filament in them. I have a fairly high humidity environment, and it makes a difference in print quality.
This is with a freshly opened refill of PLA Basic with the factory bands in place and it is right at the limit of width for AMS 2…
This is after drying. The filament roll is pushing out hard against the sides of the reel and it’s still tightly latched. I cinched it down with the Velcro straps from the stated 74mm when I took it out of the AMS.
This view shows the separation in the gap between the halves of the spool. The purple is flush against and the pink is opened about a mm. but still latched.
They claim to have “Responsive Customer Support” if you haven’t yet you might try contacting them if nothing indicates here that other users have had the same issue.
Edit: how many hours did you run the dryer? (I know the spools are rated for 70c but I’m curious.
I did shoot them a message yesterday. It ran for the default 6 hours on the PLA setting at 50 degrees C.
Did you ever take it out of the spool and measure if the spool became distorted?
How was the filament secured during drying? Was it in the press-in groove or woven out and in the hole? My general rule for myself is that the press-in groove is really only for temporary filament moves.
My rule is that whenever I dry or store a spool, I use the woven hole. Which seems well designed because you can get filament out and back in without bending it so much that a trim becomes required.
Another question: how old is that refill? I have gotten some refills from Bambu recently where the vacuum bag seemed slack, and the new refill was harder to get on than normal. I only ask because the expansion, even at the cardboard tube, seems big.
My problem was overdrying the filament not the spool. If I could delete this post I would.
