Turn of printer with paused print

Hello everybody. I’m new to the X1 Carbon!

So this night the printer run out of filament during the print. I discovered this in the morning and the printer was still fully running, fans blowing, extruder and bed still heated. However, I didn’t have any filament in stock. So I couldn’t refill the empty tray in the AMS, to continue the print.
As I figured it would take a few days before new filament would arrive, I wanted to turn off the printer. But also didn’t want to waste the 75% finished print.

Is it possible to pause the print and then turn off the printer? So that I could’ve saved my print? Because now I had to press stop and the print can’t be resumed.

If you turn off the printer, you will lose the print. Pausing will let the nozzle cool down (it will move off-bed) but keep the bed on, as otherwise the print will detach. At this point just cancel the print and start over when you get new filament.

OK that’s too bad, but thanks for your reply! I will print it again.

Are you sure the nozzle cools down? When I paused the print (after the ‘filament empty warning’), I couldn’t change any temperature settings nor fan speeds. Hotend was fixed at 140 degrees. (Although that’s less then during printing as it would be around 220 degrees.)

I have not checked, but it may indeed cool down to 140.

I’ve run out of filament or even at times cut the end off of a pretty much finished spool and let it run until it detects the filament has run out

For the times that I have not been around to put in a fresh spool and resume immediately a couple of hours went by and I was able to load up a fresh spool, resume the prints and finish without issue

I’m not sure about how it will react for a longer time period but so long as the printer remains on you should be able to resume without issue

Also keep in mind that you have the opportunity to reach back and pull off any stragglers of filament on the nozzle before loading up the new spool and resuming the print

Hi Jrock,

Thanks for your kind reply. However I was wondering if it would be possible to turn OFF the printer and then continue later. But, reading @holmes4’s reaction, this is not possible, unfortunately. (This doesn’t help me if I need to wait a few days for new filament…) Thanks again!

I would try just unplugging the printer from the wall not just turning it off and it should think there is a power outage then when you plug it back up it should ask to resume and if your print hasn’t came loose from the bed then you should be ok to resume. just my thoughts.
I didn’t see that this was an old post just disregard my reply.

It does continue when power gets back… BUT. If the head was touching the item being printed (99% of the time that is the case), it will tear it of the build plate.
Firmware should have some kind of powerloss feature where it first heats everything up (Bed and hotend, and not return to filament change).
Maybe it would help.
I have put mine on UPS

I had accidentally hit the power button on the powerstrip connect to the printer mid print. I turned it back on, the printer asked if I would like to resume print with warning that it will attempt to but basically no promises. It resumed fine.

Note: after hitting yes, it appeared to do nothing the Play button was still showing not the pause, after hitting it a few times not knowing if I needed to and 20 seconds or less it started back up.

CAUTION: if done on purpose no guarantee it will work but don’t turn printer off, unplug or switch off power strip.
