Updates and Third-Party Integration with Bambu Connect

Not just mobile… playback controls aren’t loading for me on Linux /w Brave Browser … so as a “demo” it’s not off to a good start

Meh… they even acknowledged that they did that at the top of the article… it’s no different to my national broadcaster “updating” news articles several days later… or should I should complain about that?

Updated: January 20, 2025 - to update information for OrcaSlicer users

Yes, that is true, it only lets you roll back two versions (or maybe more? since I am currently offered 01.03.10 and 01.03.00, it could be until the first release of the last minor version). Sure, storage is cheap, and they could offer all the versions, and there are arguments both for and against making all the older versions available. But that doesn’t change the fact the OP said you would NOT be able to downgrade from this new firmware version, and I was asking where is this stated/documented? Since as far as I am aware, you should be able to try the new firmware out when it comes out if you see fit, and if it doesn’t work for you, simply roll back to the prior firmware and forget about it.

No, you will pay 80$ a month for the privilege to press start button on the printer you bought and is yours.

Will never happen. The minute Bambu even hinted at this happening, there would be drop in alternative firmware for all their printers within a month, and a near total boycott on sales of all future hardware. I guarantee it, and present the reaction of the community to this “access control” “security” firmware  Bambu does not want to go there… that would be commercial suicide. :scissors: :scissors:

In the Terms of use of Bambu Lab in point 7.3 ( https://bambulab.com/de-de/policies/terms) is the following written:

If you decide not to download and use an update provided by Bambu Lab, you understand that you may place the Product under serious security risk or cause the Product to be unusable or unstable. Some of the functions of the Product may be limited based on the version. Updating to the latest version may improve your user experience.

That means for me I decide to NOT install the update and this way I can still use my Panda Touch.
Since in the Terms of use is written that I can decide the download and update of software updates, Bambu should NOT install any update automaticaly .

I will also try to sell my P1S for as much money as possible and switch back to Creality, where everything is open and I am not forced into an ecosystem that only really benefits the owners of the ecosystem (Bambu Lab), while the customers who made the company rich only suffer disadvantages.

Apparently, Bambu Lab has not yet looked outside the door and seen how other companies around the world fared when they imposed such restrictions. These companies mostly no longer exist, simply because they ignored their customers.

Well done @Bambu Lab, from an innovative company with cutting-edge technology and customer focus, to a company that is getting worse day by day and which no longer interests its customers.

I was days away from pulling the trigger on expanding with additional printers from Bambulabs… but now I’m having serious second thoughts. More due to Bambulabs handling of the matter than the content of the update itself. Gaslighting the community for raising legitimate concerns. Shame on you.

Is it invalid?

I would expect Connect to at least start, even if it could find no compatible printers.

With internet, Connect will start and find my non-beta, v01.08.00 X1C. In either cloud or LAN mode, I can drag and drop a sliced file from Studio or Orca into Connect and it will print.

But Connect will not start if there is no internet.

Just my 2 cents.

I bought my first Bambu printer just 20 days ago, and I wouldn’t have if I was shopping now. My trust in this brand has evaporated overnight. I can’t think of an audience (myself included) that would be less receptive to this consumer gaslighting and DRM nonsense than people who are into 3D printing. What a predictable and entirely boneheaded move.

I was just about to post a link to this video as well.

Unfortunately, Creality has been trying to take the same route for the last few years as well. Started with Sonic pad and continuing with K series. At least they do not lie like BL.

I agree with the rest.

Actually the new update is a bigger security risk than the current firmware we have. This isn’t a security update it’s a security regression.

hard coded cert keys, electron apps seriously have they completely lost their minds at Bambulab there is no way in hell I’m going to install the firmware update and if they decide to not let me print then I will go to a court of law as what they do then is against european consumer law.

But its for the health of your printer, it’s safe and effective - just install it already

Well I think you just ended your Future bussiness, evey 3d influencer is recommending to never buy from Bambu. I purchased an X1c with AMS less than 30 days ago, now i wish I hadn’t. I’m going to try and sell it, although it wont be worth much because everybody else will be selling there used Bambu printers. I was testing out your printer for print farm work, I think now Im going to go to Qidi and or Creality. Thanks for Nothing! BMac

I just bought an A1 printer, which is still on its way to me. I chose Bambu because everyone recommends them, then less than a week after the purchase this news appears, the question is should I send it back or hope like bambu will reconsider the decision to release this update and that it will not force us to use what program and how we want our printers bought with our money

I don’t know how to re-word this post, so let me instead repeat what I think about “security issues” and bambu connect:

All stated “cloud issues” and “security concerns” could be solved by hiring actual cloud security expert and it would cost less with no community blowback, no people overreactig, no bricking of 3rd party accessories or things like home assistant and even no need to spend time and money developing Bambu Connect.

BambuLabs are showing values of deceit by changing the terms on us and creating an unbearable temptation to lock you into a costly to escape trap. The insight they gained from us we would want sent to a trustworthy company instead. Still, I hope I’m wrong. Not too late to backtrack and show trustworthy business practices.

Firmware Update Thoughts…

I think we’re all a little confused by the news about the firmware update Bambu Lab plans to roll out. On the surface, it looks like Bambu Lab wants to close security gaps. That sounds great… but they have only themselves to blame. No one forced them to send print jobs via the cloud…

Unfortunately, this comes with restrictions on the use of third-party software and hardware. For example, the Panda Touch will be disabled, and as of now, Orca Slicer will only work through Bambu Connect. Control of the printer through Home Assistant, for example, will be over!

The latter is inconvenient but manageable. What’s more puzzling are the contradictory statements coming from Bambu Lab. First, they announce the update is mainly to fix security issues (which were self-inflicted by the forced use of online services…), then there’s information that it will still be possible to keep the old firmware, and that there is no mandatory upgrade. Then, they announce that in Developer Mode, everything might stay the same, but the terms and conditions from Bambu Lab state the following:

7.4 Your Bambu Lab product will automatically search for and download new update packages to provide you with timely update services. These updates are designed to resolve cybersecurity loopholes and prevent new threats, and it is important to accept and install security-related system updates in a timely manner. Due to the importance of these updates, your product may block new print jobs before the update is installed, and will immediately provide update notifications to help you understand the related information.

This is the exact opposite of what Bambu Lab is currently communicating to users.

Let’s explore this a bit further.

Okay, it’s annoying, but I’ll install the new firmware because Bambu Studio does pretty much everything I need, and of course, I don’t want anyone to break into my network (are there solid reports on how often this has actually happened?).

Now, let’s go into the realm of fiction!

In six months, another email from Bambu Lab.
To ensure the quality of our products and software, and due to numerous support requests, we are forced to charge a monthly fee of EUR 4.99 for Bambu Studio or EUR 2.99 for using Bambu Connect. The subscription must be for a 12-month period.

A few months later:
To ensure the quality of our products, from now on, filaments that are not authorized by Bambu Lab will no longer be processed by the printer. Please use original Bambu Lab filaments or filaments authorized by Bambu Lab, which can be tracked using a QR code via the Bambu Studio app (available on iOS and Android).

You think this is far-fetched? Look at what Elegoo did with their resin printers just over a year ago, or how the development of the Lychee Slicer unfolded…

The problem here is that Bambu Lab, due to the ease of use of its products, is now addressing a user base that doesn’t come from the typical “I’ll tinker with the printer myself” crowd. It has become a consumer product, and Bambu Lab has likely quickly realized that their resources are “finite” because they’re now receiving support tickets that shouldn’t even exist if users had properly engaged with the product. This creates costs that can no longer be covered by just selling the hardware.

Moreover, it’s Bambu Lab’s declared goal to become the “Apple” of the 3D printer world. Apple, for instance, generates a significant portion of its profits from services and licenses. Why shouldn’t Bambu Lab do the same? The analogy in the 3D printing world would be Formlabs. With them, nothing works without a service contract and original materials. Eventually, the printer just stops functioning…

In other words, they’ve hooked the user market, and now they’re starting to milk it.

The dilemma is that there are now two camps: those with years of experience who feel “scammed” and those who say, “Oh, come on, EUR 4.99 isn’t a big deal.”

Bottom line: You’re giving up freedom. Especially considering that legally, it would certainly need to be checked whether it’s permissible to make a product that was purchased under different conditions start incurring follow-up costs or, in the worst case, become unusable without a subscription model.

This would indeed be the consequence if Bambu Lab follows § 7.4 of their terms and conditions. Then you either pay or the printer becomes an “object” on your shelf because it no longer works.

So, I can only urge everyone to open a support ticket right now and complain about the procedure. If you don’t, the change will be inevitable. Bambu Lab will only respond to pressure!

Overall, it’s a worrying approach from a manufacturer that, for me at least, is no longer an option for a successor product — presumably “H2D.”

Now, it also becomes clearer why they postponed the launch to spring 2025. In the background, they’ve likely been working on this speculative sales strategy for a while and just hadn’t finalized the conditions for the 2.x firmware update yet. By the way, it’s also expected that these changes will be implemented across all printers that Bambu Lab currently has in its portfolio.

My printer, at least as of today, is “offline” and only connected via LAN. I don’t allow anything “automatic” anymore and will only use the SD card if necessary. Now it’s also clear why the camera feed hasn’t worked for the past few weeks when the firewall is activated on a Mac…

You reckon it has anything to do with only allowing firmware that works with x version of studio and Handy?

Flashforge recently released a new Orca-flashforge and anymaker app for the phone. This too was for cloud security. If you upgraded your PC and phone software, you had to upgrade your firmware to 3.0.1, or the software wouldn’t recognize the printer.

I upgraded software, couldn’t find my printer. Problem was, my printer says it’s on the latest firmware (2.7.6). Flashforge didn’t even have firmware on their website as new as my 2.7.6, let alone the current 3.0.1.

I managed to get latest firmware from a user group member. I had sent in a support ticket to flashforge about my conundrum, I’ve still yet to hear about it.

Any who, when all was said and done, everything works great. The app has much better connectivity.

Yep. I’m buying my filament elsewhere and I’ve already messaged a friend to whom I recommended buying a P1S.

It’s not a great machine anyway. Bambu Studio disconnects from it constantly. And despite your site saying you need an AMS Filter Hub, you can just print a mount for a 4-1 or AMS Lite hub and save $70 AU.

Guess I can’t trust firmware updates to not mess my junk up. Awesome. Now I’m driven to cost you money you would’ve otherwise made.
