Upgrading Extruder & Hot End

The documentation I have found on Bambu says for some materials (PC) they recommend upgrading the Extruder and Hot End on the P1S. But I can’t find any information that says what they mean by upgrading the Extruder and Hot End.

Regarding the Extruder: Is upgrading the Extruder gears to Hardened Steel the upgrade that Bambu is suggesting? Is the only difference between the X1C and P1S Extruder the Hardened Gears? Or does the X1C Extruder have other differences?

Regarding the Hot End: How do you upgrade the Hot End? I already have Hardened Steel Hot Ends for my P1S. Is Bambu suggesting changing to something like the X1C Hot End? Is the X1C Hot End a direct bolt-on for the P1S?

Yeah, the gears (and the plugs) are the only difference and that is what Bambu is suggesting.

If you already have the hardened steel hot end then you’re good to go there. Other than the steel the only other difference in the X1C and P1S hot ends are the plugs.

All you need is the gear and you’ll be setup to print abrasives.

If I only print with abrasive filaments occasionally do I still need to upgrade to hardened extruder gears?

It’s eats away at the gears, but how fast depends on the filament. I’ve got some PPA-CF that feels like sandpaper to the touch. If you only do it very rarely it might take a while before you notice an extrusion difference. Here’s a pretty interesting page where CNC Kitchen did some experiments and then cut the nozzles in half so you can see the inside:

( I know this is nozzles and not gears but it gives you an idea how it eats away at things).

That was actually very interesting, thank you.

I’ve upgraded my P1S to the BIQU Panda Claw Extruder Gear and the E3D 0.4mm High Flow ObXidian™ Complete HotEnd, so I can print anything or everything on it, although if you’re thinking about printing some materials, it’s a good idea to think about increasing the nozzle size to a 0.6mm at least to prevent clogging.

The Panda Claw gears seem like an upgrade in design and manufacture from the Bambu hardened gears. But after a search, I could not really find much in the way of Reviews for it.

Also, that they recommend putting grease on the gears concerns me. As they show in their installation video, the Extruder Casing collects dust. And the grease will collect that dust.
