they have 2d codes also. so the h2d could detect it and limit the print area dynamically 
is this already a thing? if not: do you think it will be?

I think you can do this manually by changing the lrintable area. Go to the printer settings in BS, under Printable Space click “Set…” and a new window will open. Mine (P1S) shows a 256x256 rectangle with an origin of 0,0. I imagine if you set yours to the same, and place the plate on the left side of the bed, it would ignore the space on the right.
Curious to know if it’ll work! Maybe try doing one of those one layer bed cleaning prints, might want to set speeds and acceleration to a snail’s pace though and be ready to flip the power switch just in case.
